  • 4 august 14-20, 2002 news By: Chad Messer I WCnewsmagazine studentheadlines 32 YEAR RELATIONSHIP WITH JAMAICA CONTINUES At the summer commencement exercises on August 9th, 57 Jamaican citizens received degrees from Western Carolina University, and for the first time in the thirty-two year relationship between WCU and Jamaica, many of them were master's degrees. Twenty-two Jamaican educators were awarded master's degrees in educational supervision at the exercises in the Ramsey Center. All 22 of these graduates work in Jamaica as teachers or school administrators, and they are the very first residents of their country to receive graduate degrees through Western's Jamaica Program, Burchell Whiteman, Jamaica's minister of education, youth and culture, was on hand to give words of praise and encouragement to the 22 .master's degree candidates and 35 bachelor's degree candidates, as welt as the rest of WCU's graduating class. More than two thousand Jamaicans have upgraded up their teaching skills through the Jamaica Program since its' inception in 1970. Many of the students began their classwork in extension classes in Jamaica and finished in summer residency programs in Cullowhee. WCU Volleyball Honored For Academic Excellence The women's volleyball team posted a cumulative 3.44 GPA, ranking them tops in the Southern Conference and tying them for 16th nationally, Western was one of only two teams in the state to make the Division I list, the other being the Boone Goons. The achievement will be recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches' Association and Molten USA, Inc. with the 2001-2 AVCÅ/MoIten Team Academic Award. " The AVCA/MoIten Team Academic Award is awarded to college and high school teams that post at least a 3.3 grade point aver- age in a 4.0 scale, or a 4.1 GPA on a 5.0 point scale during the semester. am h adlin Freshman Reading List Author to Speak at WCU Robert Sapolsky, author of "A Primate's Memoir: .A Neuroscientist's Unconventional Life Among the Baboons", which was featured on WCU's summer Freshman Reading Program, will give a free public talk at 8pm on Wednesday, September 4 in the Coulter recital hall. The four year old Freshman Reading Program requires that incoming students read a book selected by a university committee, which will then become an integral part of fall semester studies. Sapolsky, a MacArthur Foundation etGenius" Fellow, wrote the book detailing his study of the relationship between stress and disease among a group of baboons. He is currently a a professor of biology and neurology at Stanford University;: and a research associate with the Institute of Primate Research at the National Museums of Kenya.
