  • September 06, 2000 NEWS WESTERN CAROLINIAN 19 Front Runners Finish Strong by Melanie Cooper Staff Writer The dreary splendor of the mountain haze seemed to set the tone September 2 for the cross country teams of Western Carolina. While both teams finished fourth last year on the home course, the Catamounts took fifth of the six competing teams with the Lady Catamounts equaling last year's finish. While these teams may be off to a slow start, Coach Danny Williamson believes past teams were more experienced at the beginning of the season. "This team is more capable of doing things than those teams were," said Williamson. Leading the men were sophomore Jesse Norman and freshman Caleb Bailey. Norman finished third (26:30) with Bailey trailing close behind in fourth (26:32) on the five mile course. The Cullowhee native surprised all with a strong showing in his first meet for the Catamounts. Good things are expected from the freshman this season. "We ran well up front," said Williamson. "Our top two were better than any other teams' top two." Following Bailey were three of the team's freshmen. Of over 60 runners competing, Philip Ramsey finished twenty- forth overall with a time of 27:50. Ben Watkins and Cory McCall rounded out the top five for the Catamounts. photo by Josh Daub Freshman Philip Ramsey "We had a string of freshmen. They got strung out and we needed them together," said Williamson. "The more experience they get in racing five miles in stead of three like in high school, the better we'll get." The Lady Cats, led by sophomores Melanie Cooper and Whitney Woods, finished fourth out of seven teams. "The women did better than I had thought," said Williamson. "People actually showed that they are great competitors. They may not show that in practice all the time, but when they put the uniform on they rose to the occasion. And I like that." Cooper took sixth place with a time of 19:09, with Woods finishing 14 in 19:36. Following Woods was freshman Megan Thacker who placed 18. Juniors Holly Bright and Denise Merritt closed out the Lady Catamount's top five placing 20 and 21, respectively. "We ran well up front; and our three through six runners all ran together as a group, but we need them to move up," said Williamson. "Overall, I'm excited about the pros- Catamount Cross photo by Josh Daub Country poised at the starting line. pects. There is a lot of young talent on both teams," said Williamson. "In cross country, its not how good you are in the first race, but in the last race—and that's what we're shooting for." The Catamounts will host the Catamount Classic Saturday, September 9, 2000. The race begins at 9:15. Students are encouraged to come back the Catamount runners. Women's Soccer Opens 2-1 on Road Trip by Cory Habicht Staff Writer The Western Carolina women's soccer team took two of three matches in opening their second season of play, defeating Coastal Carolina and South Carolina State, with the lone setback coming to Charleston Southern. "So far, I'm pleased," said head coach Debbie Hensley. "We had a pretty successful weekend, but we deserved to win at Charleston Southern. But, we're going to take something from that game. It'll really help us prepare for upcoming games." The Lady Catamount soccer squad went on the road to defeat Coastal Carolina 5-3 last Saturday in their first game of the season in Conway, SC. They then .traveled to Charleston Southern on Monday and were edged out I -2 in a close contest. Tuesday, the Lady Cats (2- 1) overwhelmed South Carolina State, winning 9-0. Six players knotted goals, with three players scoring two. Sophomores Nardia Moore and Kelly Barker, and freshman Lauren Bramlett all recorded double scores. Barker and Bramlett, who is recovering from ACL surgery, added an assist. Also adding scores for Hensley's Cats were freshman Felicia Wilson and sophomores Yasmin Morton and Morgan Foresman. Freshman goalkeeper, Hendersonville's Tina Weaver, got the win in her first collegiate start. Western Carolina suffered their first loss on Monday against Charleston Southern. Though controlling the ball for most of the game and kicking 14 shots to eight by CSU, they fell 2-1 to the Lady Buccaneers. Charleston Southern got on the board first in the 39th minute when Jennifer Strukel kicked home a cross by Christi Arnold past Tinsley. The Lady Bucs struck again at 68:26 when Jennifer Sloan's cross went off the out-stretched hands of Tinsley and Christi Arnold chipped it in the goal. Western Carolina pulled to within one in the 85th minute when Nardia Moore from Fountain Inn, SC knocked home the Lady Cats' only goal of the game with an assist by Howell. In a losing effort, Tinsley made five saves, including four in the second half. Western also had five corner kicks to only two by CSU. The team's first effort of the season was paced by stand-out freshman midfielder Jordan Howell, who netted a hat trick in her first-game of college competition. The Lady Chanticleers (0-2- 1) got on the board first when Marissa Kovacs headed home the cross of Kristen Wisse at 21:41. Southern Pines native Howell answered for Western Carolina eight minutes later with her first goal assisted by fellow freshman forward Felicia Wilson. Tiffany Turner put Coastal up once again with her second goal of the season. "I thought the girls played great. They got focused and showed a lot about themselves by battling from behind," said Hensley. "They overcame the first-game jitters well." The Lady Cats tied up the game at two when Howell kicked home her second goal less than three minutes before the half. Sophomore midfielder Kelly Barker and freshman midfielder Brandy Ossman assisted her on the goal. CCU's Wisse opened the second half by putting her squad back ahead 3-2 with a direct kick from 25 yards out. For the third straight time, Howell was the answer for the Lady Catamounts when she beat her defender and the goalie to complete her hat trick. Wilson netted the game- winning goal in the 68th minute, beating two Lady Chants defenders before putting WCU up for good at 4-3. Sophomore Morgan Foresman from Hendersonville, NC, the squad's fourth-leading scorer from a year ago, kicked the nail in the coffin by knocking home a rebound off the leg of Stacey Mardis at 83:56. Howell's hat-trick was the first in her collegiate career, but also the first in the WCU women's soccer program history. Sophomore goalkeeper Mandi Tinsley made four saves in net to help Western to victory. The Lady Catamounts out-shot CCU 13-8 and had eight corner kicks to only two by Coastal Carolina.
