£port» Cats Come Close ...from Page 1 However, the Blue Raiders displayed improvement last Saturday and led Morehead state befor a series .it mistakes spelled defeat. "Middle Tennessee compares favorably with Tennessee Tech and everyone knows what happened i few weeks ago when we played at Tech. We have to be ready to play a complete football game this time...I don't think me or the team can take another humiliation like we experience at Tech," warned Waters. "The key to this game and the other games left on our schedule is intensity," said Waters. "We had it last Saturday and almost beat a team with top tewnty potential." The Catamounts were the talk of the Carolinas last weekend after they had played nose to nose with the ACC power. "I'm very encouraged that we played so well againsi a fine football team and in front of 60,000 people, but I am also a little disappointed that we had a chance to win it and didn't," Waters continued. "It was an outstanding effort against some pretty big odds; take away a couple of mistakes and we could have won it." Waters was especially pleased with some of Ihe mental accomplishments his team made in the Clemson game. "Wc lost, but you culd sec a lot of confidence," he explained Waters was especially pleased with some of the mental accomplishments his team made in Ihe Clemson yame. "We lost, bill you could see a lot of confidence growing among our players and lhal is something wc needed....confidence," he explained. "Our defense really played well and our offense proved it could be consistent and move the football againsi an outstanding defensive team," Waters added. The Catamounts' defense allowed Clemson to score on a sustained drive only once as the other scoring drives started as the result of a WCU fumble and blocked punt. Tackle John Strong, with 10 unassisted tackles including a quaterback sack and two other stops in the Clemson backfield. led the defensive effort along with linebackers Ricky Smith and Charlie Hughes, nose guards Eddie Ested and Clay Billiard, ends George Alston and Don Chason and eornerback Lee McCall.-" David Mashburn, making his first start at quaterback. led Western's offense with 218 yards. The Enka sophomore, who started his collegiate carter at Middle Tennessee in 1978, completed 16 of 31 passes for 184 vards and one score picked up an additional 34 yards on the ground. His favorite target was all-evcrything split end Gerald Harp who caught six passes, including one for a touchdown, totaling 124 yards as he moved closer to becoming only the fourth player in major college history to record 3.000 pass receiving yards. The Catamounts' offense rolled up 321 yards of offense, which is 164 more yards than 10th ranked Georgia gained against Clemson a week earlier. "David did a good job with the passing game, but we also got our running game untracked. Anthony (James) and Leonard (Williams) ran hard and our offensive line blocked well for both the run and the, pass," noted Waters. "If we can get after people like we did at Clemson, we can have a fine football team and a successful season," said Waters. "However, " he added, "we are going to have to do it every: week for the next seven weeks and not just every other week." WClTs defensive unit managed to hold Clemson's drives in cheek Saturday at Death Valley. Photo by lock IWDanid. Tigers Edge Cats Saturday Clemson University put together a second half, 99 yard drive to the goal line and withstood an inspired Western Carolina team all afternoon as the Tigers defeated Western 17-10 in a college football game played at Clemson Saturday, September 27. The Tigers, playing before a home crowd of 60,200, were heavily favored over Western, but could never turn the game into the expected rout. After recovering a Catamount fumble at the WCU 25 yard line, Western held the Tigers to a 24 yard field goal by Obed Ariri with 3:50 left in the first quarter. That score stood until Clemson's Chuck Rose blocked a Grady Corbin punt, recovering at the WCU 29 with 3:51 to go in the half. Six plays later the Tigers scored on a 1 yard run by Charles Pickett. Western came back in the third quarter on a 55 yard pass play to Gerald Harp on a perfectly executed triple reverse. After the dazzling play that gave the Cats the ball at the Clemson 18, Anthony James ran for four yards, before David Mashburn hit Harp on a 14 yard touchdown with 6:22 left in the quarter. After a Clemson punt, a Cat drive stalled and Corbin boomed a 45 yard punt that went out just shy of the Clemson one yard line. The Tigers, however, on the second play of the drive used a 35 yard run by Pickett, and a 24 yard run by Brendon Crite to set up a Chuck McSwain score, from 1 yard out, with 11:03 left in'the game. Western added a 41 yard field goal from Dean Biasucci with 1:01 left, but the ensuing onside kick was recovered by Clemson.
