  • The Western Carolinian Page 7 Thursday February 9, 1989 Novelist, Mystery Writer to Visit Campus OT SpDtHHgM Droopy & Richards in the Morning Gurney Norman Sharyn McCrumb A novelist and short-story author and a mystery writer will visit Western Carolina University Wednesday, February 15, through Friday, February 17, as part of the university's Visiting Writers Series. Gurney Norman, author of the novel "Divine Right's Trip," and Sharyn McCrumb, who has published five mystery novels, will give public readings of their work on the Western Carolina campus and at the public library in Sylva during their visit. The two authors will read from their fiction at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, February 16, in Room 104 of Killian Building at WCU. Admission is free, and the readings are open to the public. After the readings, there will be an autograph session and an informal reception sponsored by the WCU English club. The visit is sponsored by WCU's Office of Academic Affairs, the department of English, the English club, Nomad (the student art/literary magazine), the Jackson County Arts Council, the North Carolina Arts Council and the National Endowment of the Arts. The writers will appear at 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 15, at the Jackson County Public Library in Sylva, with a reception afterward sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Norman and McCrumb also will give readings and lectures at Southwestern Community College, which is co-sponsoring their visit. Norman, an associate professor at the University of Kentucky, is a novelist, storywriter and screenwriter. His "Kinfolks," a collection of short stories, won the W. D. Weatherford Award as the most significant book about Appalachian published in 1978. He has published numerous short stories in anthologies and magazines, and his articles and essays have appeared in Esquire, Appalachian Journal, Whole Earth Catalogue and other magazines. A play based on "Kinfolks" was produced at the Image Theater in New York City in 1984. Norman has also worked on various screen adaptations of his fiction, and he wrote and narrated a one-hour television documentary, "Time on the River," which aired on Kentucky Educational Television in 1988. McCrumb has written five mystery novels including "Sick of Shadows," "Highland Laddie Gone" and "Paying the Piper." Her novel "Bimbos of the Death Sun" won a Mystery Writers of America Edgar Award for best paperback original in 1988, and her novel "Lovely in Her Bones" was named best Appalachain novel by the Appalachian Writers Association in 1986. A former film librarian and adjunct professor of communications at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, McCrumb received a Sherwood Anderson Short Story Award in 1983. Her stories have appeared in numerous magazines, including Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, Appalachian Heritage and Crescent Review. While at Western Carolina, Norman and McCrumb will meet with students and faculty in writing workshop classes and will discuss aspects of the craft of fiction-writing, the editing of manuscripts, and marketing publishing fiction. Those who opt to set their alarm clocks for music over the ear-shattering blare of a brutal alarm may be in for a rude awakening if they're tuned into WWCU's FM 90.5 . Instead of a gentle musical nudge, they'll be accosted in stereo by "Droopy and Richards in the Morning". "Droopy ", alias Drew Parham, and "Richards", aka Randy White, are the morning crew at WWCU, serving up a breakfast of music and talk that, while intending to entertain, has often provoked complaint and criticism. White, a senior majoring in Corporate Finance, and Parham, a sophomore RTV major, teamed up in August, 1988. Both had worked mornings at WWCU, but "Droopy and Richards" is their first joint effort. White was persuaded by former "Electric Lunch" DJ, Brad Owen, to get involved with the radio station, and he has since accepted management duties in addition to his Country music superstar Hank Williams Jr. plays guitar during a rehearsal Thursday, Feb. 2 in the WCU Ramsey Center. Parham inherited his position from graduating seniors. By virtue of his major, he has experienced both radio and television, and has chosen radio as his medium. "TV is too fake," he says, "Radio people are fun, unique, sometimes strange, sometimes really weird." That "weirdness" is what Parham and White attempt to cultivate on their early morning show, and it nettled 11 complaints about them last semester. "We have guidelines drawn for us by the FCC and the station, but a lot of it is 'gray area'. Sometimes we have to tiptoe around an issue. A lot of the complaints resulted from misunderstandings. We never mean to harm— it's always fun...except for that one time." Satire and social criti cism, talk of partying, beer drinking, sex, and the opposite sex are mainstays of "Droopy and Richards in the Morning". Parham admits they let slip with "some sexist remarks," but adds, "We want people to turn on the radio and say, 'These guys are insane.' " Both are early risers, rolling out of bed by 5:30 am to begin waking the campus at 6. "We survive on lots of caffeine, various things from Hardees," said Parham," and avoiding parties." "Sometimes we're not awake, we have to fake it," said White, "But I like to be here. We have an impact." "And we have a blast," added Parham. COME OUT OF HIBERNATION!
