  • JANUARY 31. 19H0 Till WESTERN CAROLINIAN Pas*" >s 127,000 over three years Nursing dept. receives health grant The nursing department of WCU's School of Nursing and Health Sciences has received a $127,347 grant from the Kate B. Reynolds Health Care Trust to formulate and implement a plan to assist registered nurses in a 16-county area of Western North Carolina in acquiring baccalaureate degrees in nursing. Announcement of the grant, the largest private award ever for Western's nursing program, was made by W. Vance Frye, executive secretary of the Reynolds Health Care Trust in Winston-Salem and Dr. H. F. Robinson, WCU chancellor. The three-year grant is aimed at aiding the university in a commitment to help improve health care in WNC. Some 10 percent of WCU's current professional nursing enrollment at the upper level consists of registered nurses seeking baccalaureate degrees. However, of the 2,306 registered nurses identified in the 16-county region in the grant proposal, more than 67 percent held diplomas or associate degrees. "There has been an increase in inquiries by nurses interested in pursuing a baccalaureate," said Sharon Farley, assistant professor of nursing at WCU and principal author of the grant proposal. "And, we know there are about 1,600 diploma or associate RNs. But we don't know how many want a baccalaureate degree or what their special learning needs may be." "We feel many do have special needs for things such as night instruction or scheduling time off from their jobs to work toward a degree," Miss Farley said. "This grant will give us the opportunity to more realistically define those needs and the appropriate responses our faculty can make to meet those needs." Dr. Thomas F. Connelly Jr., dean of the WCU School of Nursing and Health Sciences, said that the search for a program coordinator will begin immediately with the expectation that the position could be filled and the planning project could get under way by June 1, 1980. Connelly emphasized that the initial stages of the three-year grant will concern themselves with needs assessment, evaluation and research. There are four major objectives Western hopes to accomplish with the Reynolds' grant: --To evaluate and revise procedures which attempt to make full use of the registered nurse student's educational and practice background in planning a course of study at WCU. This area will concern itself with transfer of credits and credits by examination whenever feasible. --To survey the area's registered nurses to find out what special needs they have when returning to school to pursue a baccalaureate. --To work with WCU's admissions office to continue establishing agreements with regional colleges and universities so that registered nurses may take lower division courses closer to home. --And, to give individual advisement in order to plan a course of study that will fit individual needs. 'The grant from the Kate B. Reynolds Health Care Trust exemplifies the very significant and important type of help that private agencies can give to state universities such as Western Carolina University," Dr. Connelly said. "Our nursing program funds are generally devoted almost entirely to teaching functions relative to our enrolled students. To develop new programs and revise existing programs to meet regional needs, we depend heavily on resources originating outside the university, like the Reynolds' Trust," he said. The nursing program at WCU is in its 10th year and u;is awarded eight-year accreditation by the National League of Nursing in May of 1979. Tne Kate B. Reynolds Health Care Trust makes statewide grants to improve the health care of the people of North Carolina. The grants are mainly awarded to non-profit organizations and institutions for innovative programs and projects. Currently the Reynolds' Trust grants some $1.4 million for this purpose. Counties included in the upcoming planning project are Avery, McDowell, Buncombe, Henderson, Polk, and all counties west of them.
