  • Page 4 /THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/JANUARY 31, 1980 Carolinian Newsbriefs "Winter Happening tf Folk art exhibit Two new exhibits, folk art from the collection of a Weavervillean and paintings and photographs by two Cullowhee artists, have been announced for WCU's Mountain Heritage Center. The folk art exhibit, to feature some 150 old and contemporary crafts such as quilts, baskets, pottery, pewter and woodware, is currently on display in Gallery B of the Mountain Heritage Center. Works in that exhibit are from the private collection of Robert Conway, curator of the Appalachian Folk Art Museum in Asheville. The painting and photograph exhibit, entitled "Presence of Wilderness," will feature approximately 25 paintings by Roger Stephens and 25 photographs by Larry Tucker, both of Cullowhee. That exhibit will begin Jan. 30 in the lobby and foyer of the Mountain Heritage Center, according to Sam Gray, museum specialist and exhibits curator at WCU. Both exhibits will be on display until May 1. A reception marking the opening of 'roth exhibits will be held Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m. in the Mountain Heritage Center. The public is invited. The Mountain Heritage Center exhibits are open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and on special weekend occasions. Guided group tours are invited on a reservation basis. There is no admission charge.' Law school backlog PRINCETON, N.J.--Applicants to law schools are advised that delays in delivery of a new computer system have resulted in a backlog of Law School Data Assembly Service (LSDAS) reports to law schools. Law schools have been made aware of the problem through frequent updating on the status of the processing schedule. Although law school admission offices may be somewhat slowed in making their decisions, students can be assured that fairness will be paramount, and no individuals will be penalized for late reporting delays incurred by the LSDAS. Because of the backlog, it is estimated that, at the current processing rate, there will be delays for about the next eight weeks. Staff have been greatly expanded and are working long hours to meet these problems. Educational Testing Service (ETS), which administers the LSDAS, regrets any personal inconvenience to candidates. The LSDAS was begun in 1970 at the request of the law schools. Its purpose is to summarize information from college transcripts, test scores from the Law School Admission Test and other biographical information used for evaluation by the law school admission offices. If there are specific problems that cannot wait, please write to Law Programs, Newtown, Pa. 18940. Please do not telephone. Folklore forum "The Essence of the Appalachian Woman" will be the subject of a public forum to be held on Thursday, February 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mountain Heritage Center Auditorium. Dr. Cratis Williams, a nationally known authority on Appalachian culture and Special Assistant to the Chancellor at Appalachian State University, will be the principal speaker. His topic is "Culture that Endures- Traditions, Customs, and Values Worth Keeping." Author of "The Southern Mountaineer in Fact and Fiction," Williams has received many awards for his work in southern folklore. He is widely known as a speaker. Veronica Nicholas of Sylva will be the moderator of the panel that will respond to Williams' talk. Other members of the panel are Harriet Parker, WCU Registrar; Mary Stone, WCU student; Anna Lynn Bell of Cullowhee; and Frances Lombard of Highlands. The meeting Thursday night is one of a series of forums that are presented throughout the year, each in a different location in Western North Carolina, focusing on women and human values in Appalachia. The series is funded by the North Carolina Humanities Committee and sponsored by the Council on Appalachian Women. The Council will pay seventeen cents a mile to the driver of any car bringing four or more people to the forum. Reimbursement forms can be obtained in the lobby of the Mountain Heritage Center on Thursday night. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.
