  • GOP chief seeks 11 th District seat Bill Hendon, Western North Carolina Civic Leader and former 11th District Republican Chairman, announced Wednesday his candidacy for the United States Congress, subject to the May Republican Primary. Making the announcement at the Great Smokies Hilton in Asheville, Hendon, 35, said that he has resigned both the District GOP Chairmanship and his position as General Manager of Putsch and Co. in Fletcher to devote full time to the campaign. A native of Asheville, Hendon is the son of the late F. William Hendon, prominent Asheville businessman, and Mrs. Mary Ward Hendon. He said his real concern for what is happening to this country, both at home and around the world, led him to seek the office. "Runaway inflation, the incredible price of fuel oil and gasoline, the loss of respect for America all over the world, these problems seem out of control and beyond ability of anyone to solve," Hendon said. "But that does not keep these problems from being felt any less by the American people," he added. "The effect of runaway inflation hits home every time another retired couple finds their hard-earned retirement check just will not pay all the bills this month, or when younger folks have to take on astronomical debts just to buy the bare necessities for modern living." "We have just seen gasoline hit $1.00 a gallon at the pump," Hendon said, "and now the oil companies tell us it will be $2.00 a gallon by the end of this year. At those prices, driving may become a luxury many of us just cannot afford." "Internationally, just turn on the news and see where another American Embassy was burned, or where the Russians have taken over a country, or something else adverse to American interests has taken place somewhere in the world," he added. "I believe our people are concerned, like me, about these problems and the effect they are having on all of us. I believe our people, like me, want something done about the situation. They want the situation brought back under control with some stability we can count on in the world and in our own affairs." "Now I am not going to try to tell you that one Congressman can do everything about these problems," Hendon said, "but I do know this, one Congressman can do something about them." "Having grown up here in Western North Carolina, and having travelled throughout these mountains, I believe I know what our people are really concerned about. My family and I are concerned about those very same things," he said. Active in civic and political affairs in Western North Carolina, Hendon is a trustee of Asheville's Memorial Mission Hospital and a director of the Mountain Area Health Education Foundation. He also serves on the Board of the Western North Carolina Development Robinson in Colombia BOGOTA, Colombia-The world food problem is "of crisis proportion" and will get much worse in the 1980's, a leading American expert on food and population problems told a national Colombian agricultural organization here Thursday. Dr. H. F. Robinson, chancellor of WCU and an advisor on U.S. agricultural education policies, spoke to Sociedad Colombiana de Control de Malezas y Fisiologia Vegetal, known by its Spanish acronym as COMALFI in international agricultural circles and in English as the Colombian Plant Physiology and Weed Control Association. Wilson Peidrahita, COMALFI president, said Robinson was invited to address the national conference, attended by some 500 Colombian and Latin American scientists, because of his extensive experience in agricultural activities. Robinson, speaking last Thursday morning, warned that the world food crisis continues to worsen because of the continued increase in the world's population growth; "the lack of equitable distribution of food in the world and the failure of many countries to give proper emphasis to agricultural research and development that is required if the developing nations are to increase their agricultural 'productivity at a rate comparable to that of population growth." Robinson followed that warning by stating that "there is no question that we have the capacity to Turn to Page 20, please Association. Hendon was born in Asheville on November 9, 1944. He attended the Asheville public schools and graduated from Lee Edwards High School in 1962. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. and uDon comoletion of his studies was employed as instructor in UT's Department of Marketing and Transportation before returning to Asheville. He has also served on the faculty at Western Carolina University and on a part-time basis at Mars Hill College. Hendon's civic record includes service as Vice-President for Economic Development of the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the Chamber's Aviation and Highway committees. He was a founder of the Asheville Boy's Club and was elected its first president. He has also served as Y.M.C.A. football coach, as a trustee of the Asheville Orthopedic Hospital, as vice-chairman of the Asheville Transit Authority, and as a United Way volunteer. For several years during the early 1970's, Hendon assisted his father in the operation of the family funeral business in Asheville. During that time, he also served as part-time administrative assistant to R. Curtis Ratcliff, chairman of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners, during Ratcliff's first year in office. In 1974, Hendon joined Putsch and Company as General Manager of the firm's manufacturing plant in Fletcher, a position he held until his recent entry into the Congressional race. Hendon is married to the former Robbie Peters of Knoxville. They have two daughters, Carrie, 8 and Jennie, 7, both of whom attend Valley Springs Elementary School. Mrs. Hendon formerly taught home economics at Asheville High School and is currently a substitute teacher in the Buncombe County School System. Hendon and his family reside at 14 Greenwood Road in Asheville and attend Trinity Episcopal Church, where he has served as Sunday School teacher and member of the Church's governing board. arried WQinan »?Oth lemurv (o« Prt*en« PAULMA2URSKYS- AN UNMARRIED WOMAN JILL CLAYBURGH ALAN BATES ™ io tUrrtng MICHAEL MURPHY CLIFF GORMAN Producer! bv PAUl MAZURSKY and TONY RAY Written And Directed by PAUL MA2URSKY Mutk BtUCONTI Ncm In PapertMch l.om Avon CCHOR VI MOVIUAR HUNT* Wt PetUXf m.LJkSrt:MINUTER 1/PRODUCTION* 1 Sponsored by Last Minute Productions Hoey Feb. 1 8:00 Admission Student $ ] .00 Non Student $1.50 Copynghr t 1978 Tw *Catheuse ™ Hearth & Patio Restaurant Have You Had / q. rfi Mexico Fever??
