  • The Western Carolinian Voice of the Students Thursday, January 24,1980 Vol. XLV, No. 17 Carter, Bush take Iowa POLITICAL FOOTNOTES-Lee Grant Iowa Caucus With the first test of the 1980 campaign occuring Monday some candidates found themselves better off than they had hoped for and some realized that they had to work harder. On the Democrat side, President Carter blew past Senator Kennedy and took 59 percent of the vote while the senator from Mass. was left with only 31 percent with 10 percent remaining uncommitted. Kennedy's group had to be disappointed with the returns and it places Kennedy in a must win situation in New Hampshire. According to ABC News, Kennedy's troops are already finding it hard to raise funds and with the large victory by President Carter those funds may become even harder to obtain. Also the victory shows that Carter does not have to abandon his "Rose Garden Politics" campaign and go out and campaign himself. With the Democrats predicting that Carter would win easily in Iowa the main attention was focused on the Republican camp. Everyone wanted to see who would come in second behind Reagan, who was labeled the "incumbant nominee". The only fault with this was that the Republican leaders, the media, and Reagan forgot to stress to the people of Iowa that Reagan was supposed to win. George Bush who spent 30 days in Iowa campaigning up and down the state had hoped to conic in third or second, but instead settled for a first: place finish and a major victory over Reagan. The victory for Bush put him well ahead of Reagan's other challengers and it shows that Reagan can no longer afford the luxury of limited exposure and running on his '76 campaign. In an interview with ABC News in DesMoincs.Bush stated. "You people of the press didn't think I could do it. 1 did it here and I'm going to do it again." Bush then went on to tell his supporters that he would be the next man in the White House. j. Senator Howard Baker finished third in the caucus, a position that he was hoping to obtain. John Connally finished with a poor fourth place showing. Philip Crane edged out his fellow Illinois ReD. John Anderson for fifth place and Robert Dole finished last with a mere 2 percent of the vote. Here on campus I discussed the Iowa caucus with Dr. Salvatore Nerboso, of the political science department. Dr. Nerboso stated that he felt that the most important thing to remember was that these caucuses and the Turn to Page 3, Please. Catamounts to face Clemson tigers The Western Carolina University Athletic Department announced today that the 1980 football schedule will include a contest with the Clemson Tigers of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The game will be the first time that Western has scheduled an ACC opponent in football and a highlight on the 1980 schedule which is one of the most impressive in the school's history. Joining the Tigers on the schedule, who the Cats will play at Clemson's Memorial Stadium, (better known as "Death Valley"), on September 27, are home games with VMI (Sept. 6), Furman (September 20), The Citadel (October 11) and Marshall (October 25). The Cats will travel to Tennessee Tech (September 13), Clemson, Middle Tennessee (October 4), Appalachian State (November 1), UT-Chattanooga (November 8), East Tennessee State (November 15). The schedule is still tenative as an eleventh game has yet to be included. J__<* The Pershing Rifle Drill Team has been invited for a repeat performance at the Mardi Gras this year. Cadet 1st Lt. Mike Bumgarner [left] will travel to New Orleans with 25 members of the group, and they will be accompanied by the group's advisor, Major Frank Valentine [right]. Photo by E.S. McDaniel. Amiri Baraka, well-kiiiWl^ontemporary poet and secretary general of the National Black Assembly, will speak during Black History Week at WCU. Black History Week will be observed February 10 through February 16. Black history week to be observed here Black History Week will be observed at WCU Feb. 10-16 with films, forums, seminars, lectures and workshops highlighting the role of black Americans in the natron's history. The observances will be preceded by a Black Campus Ministry Conference sponsored by the Baptist Student Union of the Cullowhee Baptist Church Feb. 8-10. The conference will include a Black Appreciation Service in Cullowhee Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 10. The Rev. Ed Wheeler of Atlanta will be the speaker. Tum to Page 5, Please Drill team accepts Mardi Gras invite The Pershing Rifles, WCU's precision drill team, has been invited to perform in this year's Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans, La. The invitation, issued by the State of Louisiana and the Governor's Staff, was the second in as many years for the ROTC sponsored team. According to Cadet 1st Lt. Mike Bumgarner, Commander ot the Pershing Rifles, an invitation to participate in the Mardi Gras is an honor very few units receive. "The cadre are extremely proud of the many hours of extra work these cadets have contributed," he said. "This invitaiton just goes to show that hard work and determination really do pay off." The 25 cadets, along with their advisor Major Frank Valentine, will travel to New Orleans on February 14 where they will be guests on the USS Charleston, an amphibious cargo ship. The ship will be docked at the end of Canal St., only three blocks away from Bourbon St. The group will return to Cullowhee on February 17.
