JANUARY.il, N80 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Page 13 Incumbent to seek third term Gudger announces renomination bid WASHINGTON-Congressman Lamar Gudger today announced he will seek re-election for his third term as U.S. Representative for North Carolina's 11th District. Citing his growing seniority plus membership on three House committees-Interior, Judiciary and Ag- ing-Gudger expressed gratitude to the citizens of Western North Carolina for the support which they have provided since his election in 1976. The Democrat from Asheville said he could offer no easy answers. "We did not reach our present situation overnight and no patchwork of promises will resolve these complex troubles," he said. Noting his attendance record of 96.4 percent was one of the best in the House this past year, Gudger said he was renewing his promise first made in 1976 to be "a working Congressman dedicated to representing all the people of Western North Carolina, not just special interests!" Concerning his committee responsibilities, he cited; "The tasks at hand for our Republic would terrify a lesser people," he said. "Each day presents a new challenge, a new threat, a new hazard. Already plagued wiii. iu.-.ti""ing inflation that picks our pockets and an energy crisis some feel is insoluble, we have lately been confronted by added tumult abroad. "Fifty of our people are held hostage by militant terrorists in Iran. Now Soviet Russia, sensing an opening, snatches the opportunity to seize Afghanistan and renew its quest of centuries for a warm-water port." (Bo) Thomas of Hendersonville, then defeated Republican Bruce Briggs of Mars Hill. Challenged again by Thomas in 1978, Gudger won the Democratic nomination, then turned back Republican challenger Curtis Ratcliff of Asheville by gathering 54 percent of the votes in the November general election. Only Republican Billy Hendon of Biltmore Forest has announced he plans to run against Gudger in 1980.
