  • JANUARY31, 1980 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Page 17 WESTERN CAROLINIAN SPORTS Catamounts 'hottest' team in S.C Western Carolina University's basketball team enters the last two weeks of the Southern Conference regular season race as the hottest team in the nine-team league. The Cats have won five of their last six games, including three consecutive conference wins, and have risen from sixth place to third place in the standings in a one week period. For the record, Coach Steve Cottrell's team enters Thursday night's road trip to Carson-Newman with a 13-7 record and then will put its 6-5 Southern Conference record up against arch rival Appalachian State this Saturday night in Ried Gymnasium. Have the Cats peaked? Cottrell is not sure. "We are playing our best basketball of the season and are playing as good or better than at anytime since I've been here," said Cottrell. "However," he quickly noted, "I'm not sure we have peaked yet. I really don't know what this team is capable of.'' "When you have a team as young as this one is, you are not sure from game to game as what to expect. They are playing very good basketball and I am pleased...very pleased, but at the same time, I know they will get better. It might be this season or it might be next season, but they will get even better," he explained. The Cats bounced back from a disappointing 72-71 loss to V.M.I, last week to knock off The Citadel (79-60), East Tennessee (77-72) and Davidson (75-53). Davidson's frontline, which averages 6-8, and their 3-2 zone gave the Cats problems in the first half Monday night as the Wildcats led 25-24 at halftime. Radar, hitting on five consecutive jumpers from the 20 to 25 foot range, led WCU on a scoring blitz in the opening eight minutes of the second half when the Cats outscored Davidson 20-5. The lead reached 26 points - SOUTHERN CONFERENCE STANDINGS [As of Wednesday, January 31] Furman 11-1 16-4 Marshall 7-3 12-8 WESTERN CAROLINA 6-5 13-7 V.M.I. 5-5 10-7 UT-Chatanooga 4-5 9-9 East Tennessee 4-6 9-10 The Citadel 4-6 10-6 Davidson 3-8 6-12 Appalachian State 2-8 6-12 Th'Tsday's Games WESTERN CAROLINA at Carson-Newman Friday's Games Furman vs NC State in Charlotte The Citadel vs North Carolina in Charlotte Saturday's Games Appalachian State at WESTERN CAROLINA Marshall at UT-Chattanooga Davidson at Notre Dame VMI at Richmond Samfbrd at East Tennessee The Citadel vs NC State in Charlotte Furman vs North Carolina in Charlotte before Cottrell cleared his bench for the last three minutes. Carr, hitting on 14 of 23, scored 30 points as he continued to flash his credentials for Soujhern Conference freshman of the year honors. Dennis, again plagued by three first half fouls, spent 16 minutes on the bench, but scored 16 points in the second half and maintained his lead in the Southern Conference scoring race with 18 points. Trimier again dominated the backboards with 12 rebounds. The rout began in earnest when senior Forrest ' Callaway, starting the half for Dennis, hit a jumper for the left corner in the first sever seconds to give the Cats a 26-25 lead that was never relinquished. Callaway canned another bucket with 17:56 left in the game's mixt score and from then on it was off to the races for the Cats. Carr's ten points in eight minutes keyed the Cats to a 53-33, 20 point lead, with 8:26 left, with the Cats working the advantage up to the 26 point spread, 73-47, with 1:45 left to play. Concerning the remainder of the season, Cottrell says he sees a dogfight for the top four spots and the home court advantage for the first round of the Southern Conference tournament. "Appalachiam State is a team to keep your eye on. They have got a favorable schedule and are in position to make a big move. We will have to be ready Saturday night when they come in here," he emphasized. "It appears that we will be playing the hottest teams in the conference down the stretch. After Appalachian State, we have got to go on the road to Marshall and V.M.I, and then come home to finish up with East Tennessee and UT-Chattanooga. Marshall, after that big win over Furman. is playing up to their potential and that means trouble for everyone they play trom here on out. V.M.I, played super against us here and UT-Chattanooga is one of the most impressive teams we have played this season...every game is going to be a pressure cooker," explained Cottrell. Lady Cats fall to E. Tenn. State Western Carolina's women's basketball team fell for the third time in as many games with 87-60 loss to the Lady Buccaneers of East Tennessee State at the Mini-Dome in Johnson City. TN Saturday night. The Lady Cats led at the half. 32-30, but failed to handle ETSU's pressure in the second half, as Western committed 15 turnovers while being routed 57-28 in the final twenty minutes. Western had shooting problems also, connecting on only 37 percent of their shots (23 of 62) and lost the rebound battle, 50 to 36. Western's record fell to 9-8 with the loss, ETSU improved to 7-11. Cindi Saltz led the Lady Cats with 22 points. Jennifer Campbell netted 26 for ETSU. The defeat came on the heels of a Thursday evening loss to number one ranked Lenoir-Rhyne NCAIAW Division II. 92-71. Again the Lady Cats played well for most of the game and led 49-48 with 15 minutes to play on a three-point play by Glenda Harris. But the Lady Bears regrouped and proceeded to outscore WCU 22-2 in the next six minutes to pull away and record their thirteenth victory without a loss. Beth Crisp led Western with 25 points with Glenda Harris adding 16 and 12 rebounds. Cindi Saltz chipped in 12 to round out the double figure scoring for Western. Brenda Hairston led L-R with 29 points and Sally Reid added 15 with Donna Elrod hitting 12 and Mclinda Buchanan 10. The Lady Cats will be home for a big NCA1A Division II game, Thursday, January 31 when the Lady Apps of Appalachian State come to Reid Gym for a 6 p.m. contest.
