  • STUDENT Owned THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN STUDENT Controlled VOL. XIV—No. 12 CULLOWHEE, MONDAY, MAY 19, 1947 Published By The Student Association Dean W. E. Bird Addresses Faculty Group Here May 7 Dean W. E. Bird addressed the faculty at a meeting on May 7 on "Improvement of Instruction." His talk was divided into three main parts, "Retrospective Observations," "Improvement of Instruction," and "Suggested Methods for Improving Instruction." In the first part of his talk, Dean Bird observed that for the past several years the faculty here have emphasized curricula rather than techniques, the what rather than the how of instructions, materials rather than methods. In the second part of his speech Dean Bird said, "The reason for having this particular topic scheduled for discussion is not that anyone concerned has thought the standards and quality of instruction here to be inferior to those in other colleges. They may or may not be. No one knows, and no one has made an attempt to find out." He added that in a world of imperfections, however, no one would likely question the possibility or the desirability of improvement. In the last part of his address Dean Bird presented some suggestions for improving instruction, for thought and present and future consideration. He noted that he had no intention of presenting any conclusions or even recom- —Tnn» To Page Two Catamounts Split Twin Bill With Maryville Nine After losing the opener 11 to 7, the Catamounts came back to take a 5-4 nightcap decision from Maryville, Monday, May 12. Beorong held the Cats to six hits while his mates pounded Grogan and Cocker for nine in the first game. J. B. Beam hit round trippers in the fifth and seventh stanzas and added two singles for a perfect day at the plate for the Catamounts. In the second game, Walt Deyermond, locked with McJunkin of Maryville in a mOund duel giving up three hits to McJunkin's six. The Catamounts came from behind in their half of the seventh with a two run blast to annex the contest. J. B. Beam again took hitting honors, collecting two for three, including a triple. Catamount Staff For '47-'48 Named Thelma Joyce Finch, 1947-48 Catamount editor, has announced a partial list of the staff for the coming year. Howard Barnwell, '47 Catamount grid star, was elected business manager. Other officers are Vada Lyda, associate editor; Tom Garland, Hobe Collins, assistant editors; Wayne Gentry, sophomore class editor; Pauline Boyd, junior class editor; Loee Alley, senior class editor; Betty Brown, literary editor. Joe Bennis, Bobby Terrell, Grace Wingo, sports editors; Bobby Haynes, Jo Pryor, photographic editors; Cosette Huskey, snapshot editor; Bobby Dillard, art editor; Catherine Meadows, typist. Miss Charlotte Watson and Mr. Tyson Cathey are the faculty sponsors. The engravers and photgra- phers have not been announced. Ex-Governor J. M. Broughton To Give Graduation Address May 26 Principal Speaker Ex- Gov. J. Melville Broughton will deliver the graduation address here May 26 in the Hoey auditorium. He will be introduced by Dr. H. T. Hunter. Juniors Entertain Senior Class With A Picnic Supper Making a complete break from the traditional formal Junior-Senior banquet, the junior class went all-out to be informal in their picnic supper given in honor of the senior class, Friday night, May 9. The picnic was held at Cliffside Lake, Highlands. Approximately 60 juniors, seniors and their guests hiked over the picnic grounds, went boating on the lake and eventually ended up in the chow line. They were served quantities of hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad and sandwiches. After the food was consumed, the entire group drove to Helen's Barn, Highlands dance pavilion, which had been rented for the evening by the junior class. With late permission until 12:30, the group remained hours dancing. Committees responsible for the junior-senior picnic were: planning committee, Maxie Wright, chairman; invitations, Jim McRainey and Cosette Huskey, transportation, Pop Goodson and Tom Garland; and food, Rebecca Lee and Nancy Blanton. Rev. Blanton Of Wake Forest Will Preach Baccalaureate Sermon, May 25 Jack Allison Elected President Of Student Body Halliburton Given Fellowship Award Lynwood Hall Halliburton of Hamlet, son of Mrs. L. H. Halliburton, Meredith College, Raleigh, has been presented with a fellowship award to State College of Washington at Pullman, Washington. Dr. Wilson Compton, president of State College of Washington, and Dr. Claudius O. Johnson, head of the Department of History and Political Science, made the announcement recently that Mr. Halliburton will study in the field of history in preparation for his master's degree. Ex.-Governor J. Melville Broughton of Raleigh, will deliver the graduation address at Western Carolina Teachers college, and The Rev. Sankey L. Blanton, Dean of the School of Religion at Wake Forest college, will preach the Baccalaureate sermon. The Baccalaureate sermon will be at 11:00 a. m. Sunday, May 25th., and graduation will be at 10:00 a. m. Monday, May 26th. Mr. Broughton, governor of North Carolina from 1941 to 1945, graduated from Hugh Morson Academy in 1906, received an A. B. degree from Wake Forest college in 1910, and attended Harvard Law school 1912-13. He was admitted to the North Carolina bar in 1914, and practiced law in Raleigh. He is a former president of Raleigh Chamber of Commerce and the Raleigh Community Chest. He was a member of the North Carolina senate in 1927 and in 1929, and was temporary chairman and keynote speaker at the North Carolina Democratic convention in 1936. He is now a Trustee of Wake Forest college and the Olivia Raney public library. He has written some important pamphlets, including "T h e Legal Status of Women in North Carolina," "The Language of the Law," and "Social and Economic Aspects of Trusts." Mr. Blanton also attended Wake Forest, from which he received his A. B. degree in 1925. He received a Th. M. degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1929, and an S.T.M. degree from Newton Theological Seminary in 1931. He received his D. D. at Wake Forest in 1945. He was Pastor of Calvary Baptist church, New Haven, Conn., 1931-36, and of the First Baptist church, Wilmington, 193646. Maxie Wright Is Chosen Editor Of Western Carolinian Jack Allison became the twenty- second president of the Student Body and Howard Barnwell was elected vice president in the campus election May 9. Jack (Pinball) Allison is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Allison, of Waynesville. A rising junior, he is outstanding in athletics, making an effective showing at left end for the '46 grid Cats. He is a council member of the Men's House Government Association and a member of the Monogram club. Howard is from Black Mountain, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Barnwell. A rising senior, he was also elected business manager of the Catamount, and was a junior senator this year. He is a member of the baseball team and was a letter- man on the football squad. Both officers will assume duties at the beginning of the 1947-48 session. Deans Speaks To Seminar And English Students Ernest V. Deans, Jr., addressed the members and guests of the English Seminar of Western Carolina Teachers college Monday night, May 5. His subject was "Ingratitude in Renassance English Moral Philosophy." Mr. Deans is a member of the English department of the school's faculty. Ingratitude, Mr. Deans said, was regarded in Renassant England not only as inconsistant with friendship, but as unreasonable, unnatural, and monstrous, not only churlish, but dishonorable and treasonable. Many writers of that period considered ingratitude as the source of all evil, and the blackest of sins. Attending the Seminar were President and Mrs. H. T. Hunter and their daughter, Martha Lou, Dean and Mrs. W. E. Bird, Clarence Chrisman, Miss Anne Albright, Miss Lenora Smith, Miss Mabel Tyree, Miss Rebecca Cushman, authoress, who is spending —Turn To Page Two Jo Pryor To Be W. H. Gov't Pres. Maxie Wright, Highlands, became editor of the Western Carolinian and Charles Jones, Bakers- ville, became business manager in the campus election May 9. Jean Hall, former editor of the Carolinian and Marie Lessley, society editor, opposed the winning candidates. Maxie is a rising senior and has been a member of the Journalism Club for two years. She is President of the Women's House Government and a member of Who's Who Among Students In American Universities and Colleges. Since her arrival she has participated in student activities. Jones, a rising senior, is a former student of the college, attending in 1941-42. He served in the army for three years and returned to Cullowhee to take pre- journalism courses. He has served as sports editor for the past year. Jo Pryor, rising junior became president of the Women's House Government Association, and Loee Alley, vice president, it has been announced. Pauline Boyd was elected secretary-treasurer in the same election, May 13th. Jo is from Bear Wallow, N. C. A P. E. major, she is active in all women's sports, playing intramural basketball, softball, and volley ball. She served as council member in the Women's ^government last year. Loee, a rising senior, is a science concentration major. From Norfolk, Va., she is a member of the Western Carolina Players, feature editor of the Western Carolinian, and served on the council this year. Poly is from Norfolk and is majoring in mathematics and minoring in English. All officers will assume duties at the beginning of the 4748 session. Council members will be elected during the fall quarter.
