  • CLai^iLiNjiaM VOII'i: OF THE STI OF\TS =c VOL. XXXX No. 5 THURSDAY JULY 18, 1974 WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY CULLOWHEE, NORTH CAROLINA Burchfiel named head Dr. Guy Burchfiel, widely- known education consultant, has been named head of the WCU Department of Administration and School Personnel. His appointment was announced by Dr. Taft B. Botner, dean of the School of Education and Psychology. Burchfiel will succeed Dr. George C„ (Jumm, who has accepted appointment as director of secondary education of Washington County Schools, Abingdon, Va. "We deeply regret losing Dr. Gumm, who has done an out" standing job as head of the department," Dr. Botner said, "and consider it very fortunate that we have a person of Dr. Burchfiel's qualifications and experience to take his place." A graduate of Western Carolina, from which he also received his master's degree, Burchfiel earned his doctorate at the University of Tennessee. He joined the Western faculty in 1962 following ten years of service as a public school teacher, coach, principal, and administrator in both North Carolina and Tennessee. He has served at WCU as alumni secretary, director of summer school and public re- lations, director of the Teacher Corps, and professor of edu- cation. He has served as a special consultant to numerous public school systems. He is well known throughout the South for his work with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, served as chairman of its own self-study committee on elementary education, and currently is a member of the SACS Latin America Committee. In connection with the var- ious SACS positions he holds, Burchfiel has traveled through- Turn To Page 3 Western orients students The first of five summer orientation sessions for new WCU students and their parents will be held here Friday and Saturday. All entering freshmen and transfer students are required to attend one of the sessions to take advanced placement tests, meet with their academic advisors, and complete registration for the fall quarter. A separate schedule has been arranged for parents who wish to attend. They will tour the WCU campus, meet faculty members and administrators', and be given the opportunity to ask questions. Other orientation sessions will be held July 26-27, Aug. 2-3, Aug. 6-7, and Sept. 17-19. Further information is available from Dean Barbara Mann, director of orientation. Pictured above are several WCU students pondering over the food they just ate. The scene is from yesterday's dinner-on-the-lawn sponsored by the WCU cafeterias. A good time was had by all. (Photo by Steven C. Cook)0 Danforth grants $1000 to fund Fontana academic conference A conference involving over sixty members of the WCU academic community has been planned for the weekend of July 27-28 at Fontana Village. Funds for the conference have been provided through a $1000 grant from the Danforth Associates Special Projects Fund, and arrangements for the event have been made by Jim and Jane Horton, Cliff and June Lovin, and Curtis and Carole Wood, who are Danforth Associates at WCU„ The national Danforth Association attempts to personalize and humanize the educational process by funding programs in higher education which attempt to reach that goal. The association encourages its faculty members to develop closer personal relationships with their students and include their families in education process. The purpose of the WCU conference is to provide an informal and congenial atmosphere in which new WCU Chancellor Harold Robinson, his wife, faculty members, their spouses and students may exchange ideas and come to know each other better. Following guidelines from similar conferences, the WCU associates have limited participation "to members of the WCU associates have limited participation to members of the faculty and students, on the assumption that members of the administration already have sufficient access to the Chancellor. Participation has been further limited by the amount of money available for the project. An effort was made to see that the group includes representatives from different academic fields with a variety of viewpoints. The group includes six student leaders who have shown concern for the University. Spouses of faculty are considered full partners in furthering the goals of the Danforth Associates Program, which are the personalization and human- ization of higher education, and are included in all such Dan- forth-sponsored projects. Although the date of the conference has made it impossible for some faculty and student leaders to attend, the associates believe that a representative group has been assembled and that meaningful discussions will take place. The conference will begin with small discussion groups on Saturday afternoon. A list of topics has been compiled from suggestions made by participants, and each discussion group will decide which topics it wishes to pursue. The evening will provide an opportunity for informal social gatherings. A meeting of the entire group is planned for Sunday morning at which summaries of the discussions will be given, and the Chancellor will discuss various ideas with the group. Comedy to open July 23 An absurd comedy about marriage is the next production scheduled by the University- Players at Western Carolina University. "Play Strindberg" by Fried- rich Durrenmatt opens July 23 and runs through Julv 25 in the Little Theater. The show, staged like a boxing match, discusses the married life of Alice and Edgar. Edgar fancies himself a "famous military man of letters," and Alice feels she has missed a rewarding life on the stage because of her marriage,, After 25 years together they have grown increasingly bored with each other and their surroundings. Alice's cousin, Kurt, appears on the scene and tries to get her to leave with him. The players are Tammy Cleveland of High Point as Alice; Earl Willis of Cullowhee, as Edgar; and Chuck Arney of Morganton, as Kurt. The show was directed by Kathleen Carr of the Department of Speech and Theater Arts. For those who desire dinner and theater, arrangements have been made with The Canterbury Inn in Cullowhee to serve a buffet beginning at 6 p.m. each evening of the performance. Curtain time for the show is 8 p.m. Prices for adults for dinner and theater is 84.25, for university and high school students, $3.75 and children $3.50. Prices for the play are $1.50 for adults, 75 cents high school and college, and 50 cents for children. Liberty assumes new post Steve Liberty has been named the new director of residence life, Dr. Glenn Stillion, vice chancellor for student development, announced yesterday. Liberty was coordinator of Leatherwood Residence Hall last year. He will assume part of the responsibilities of recently-resigned housing director Dr. Tyler Combs. STEVE LIBERTY Combs' position has been divided into two separate jobs. Liberty will handle problems dealing with student life in the residence halls, while Russell Stevens has been assigned duties dealing with the physical plant of the halls. When reached yesterday, the 31-year-old Liberty said he hoped to start more educational and cultural programs in the dorms that would help the personal development of the students. He said he would be looking for ways to improve residence hall life for the students. Liberty emphasized that,"resi- dence life is an experience in itself. We hope to provide opportunities to let the students learn about themselves." Liberty said housing programs here have over-emphasized recreational entertainment for the students. He hopes to start new educational program s„ Liberty said that guest visitation in the halls would be extended next fall. In all the nen's halls and Scott Hall, which houses women, guest visitation will be allowed from 6 p.m. until midnight on Mondays through Thursdays. In all the halls there will be weekend visitation hours. Friday hours will be from 6 p.mo until 1 a.m. Saturday visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 1 a.m., and Sunday hours will be from 2 p.m. until midnight. Also, Liberty said there was still hope for coed halls at Western Carolina. Although he could not predict when coed housing would be started, he said coed living provided a "more realistic" livingatmos- phere, and "it's a good deal from an educational standpoint." Stillion said yesterday of Liberty's appointment, "I thought he could do the job. Of the directors we have he is the most advanced." Liberty will assume his new position officially on August 1,according to Stillion. Stillion said the residence halls were now undergoing major renovations. New furniture is being installed along with repainting and remodeling. He expressed hope that the students would take care of the new furnishings. Also, Stillion said about $5,000 should be available for programming in the halls.
