The main peak is to be leveled and the sloping area filled in. Dr. Allen Moore of the WCU Biology department has expressed his reservations on the suitability of the proposed site. In an interview yesterday, Moore said he feels the main difficulty is that the operation requires removing 120 feet of ridge and filling in 80 feet to level the entire area. He said "there is very little rock in the material (to be leveled)" and it "will tend to settle at the fill points and slump down the sides of the mountain creating slides." Moore added that some supporters of the project admit there are dangers concerning the settling of the land the airport would rest on. Other sites were considered but Moore said he felt those were "artificial sets of considerations" designed to make the Berry Ridge site look better. Moore also questioned the L.C.A. Wins Championship Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity won the second Annual Residence Hall Alumni Association "College Bowl" last night. In the championship match, Lambda Chi defeated the Catholic Student Center 150 to 120. The fraternity had previously beaten Buchanan Hall, the Economics and Finance Club and and the Economics Department team. The team members, Larry Ford, Keith Ramsy and Ken Williams, will receive a cash award of $100 each and alternate Robert Johnson will receive $50. The team also earned the right to represent the university in further inter collegiate competition, to be announced at a later date. The Inter Fraternity Council also gave $75 to Ford for having the highest average of correct answers per game, and the Western Carolinian, last year's winners, presented them with the team trophy. Since the airport will be located near the WCU campus, Moore said, from a teaching standpoint, the aircraft would present a noise problem. The application to the FAA said that approximately 90,000 "operations" would use the airport each year. An operation is a take-off or a landing, and that figure would mean that an average of 123 planes would take off and land at the airport each day. Moore feels the first environmental impact statement impact study concerning the Berry Ridge area contained a number of misleading statements. Moore said he understood a later edition was compiled but said it wasn't available in time to provide information for the project. A differing viewpoint was expressed by Bruce Wike, chairman of the Jackson County Board of Commissioners. Wike is a supporter of the airport for two reasons. First, and, most importantly, he said in 1967 the voters of Jackson County decided by a large margin in favor of a $150,000 bond issue to provide money to build the airport. Secondly, Wike said air travel is an integral part of the national transportation system and that although the airport may not benefit the people directly, it would benefit them indirectly. He said the airport was important "to get people in and out of the county." The Berry Ridge area was chosen, according to Wike, because from the aviation safety standpoint, "this is the best site in Jackson County that can be developed." Wike is an airplane pilot. He said 80% of the field will consist of rock. Wike stated that he didn't feel he was qualified to speak on the technicalities involved in preparing the site since he is "not an engineer" and "has no training in the field." He said he has to accept what the engineers say. Wike did say that according to his information the noise level would be slight He pointed out that plans for the project were approved in the environmental impact study. In addition to the $686,500 from the FAA, funding for the project will include a $411,900 supplemental grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission, $65,000 from the state and $209,600 in local funds. The Appalachian Regional Commission grant has been given approval at both the state and federal levels, but final appropriation of the money was awaiting the FAA grant approval. Federal revenue sharing funds totalling $140,000 are available, if needed for an airport access road. Efforts are underway for the N.C, Highway Commission to participate in building the road. At present, there is no road to the mountainous site of the proposed field. Wike said he doesn't expect bids on the project to be opened before September. He said the next step would be to com- .... Man Assaulted At Festival Avery Brown, a resident of the Canada community south of Cullowhee, was attacked and badly injured Saturjay night at the bluegrass festival in Reid Gymnasium. He reportedly went to the men's room in the gym and was grabbed by two young men while a third one hit him in the head with a drink bottle. According to Brown's wife, they then left the room through another door, unlocking the door with a key that one of the assailants pos- S6SS6d Pritchard Smith, WCU director of safety and security, said that he does not think that the attackers were students and that his office will continue to investigate the incident. A woman at the Brown residence commented that "we're going to stop damn hippies from coming into Canada. We have it out for them and they'd better pray before they come up here." Brown told his wife that one of his attackers had a ring of keys on his belt. Officers said that this indicates the man could be a WCU employee. Brown's wife said her husband is in C.J, Harris hospital in Sylva and is scheduled for sur~ gery Friday on an eye injured in the attack. She said the assailant was a short young man with short blond hair. The WCU safety and security office is investigating. Housing Contract .... Dr. Pow had been on an educational leave of absence since lastyear when he suffered a stroke. Pow is recuperating now at his home in Birmingham, Ala. —Approved a leave of absence for Clair E, Martin, head of the department of nursing, to undertake further study, contingent upon required approval of a granting agency. —Was told plans are being considered for converting Buchanan Hall from men to women and Leatherwood from women to men, and for c los ing, temporarily next year, Robertson and Moore halls and the top half of ten-floor Walker Hall, because of a smaller anticipated enrollment. —Received a building committee report that set May 10 as a bid opening date on air conditioning of Hunter Library, a project that involves about $500,000.
