The winning blow came in the bottom of the ninth inning when Cat leftfielder Jimmy Stewart singled sharply to right to drive in the go-ahead run. The victory clinching RBI came with two out and capped a three-run come- from-behind Western rally. WCU's attack, usually potent in recent games, trailed 7-5 going into the bottom of the ninth, having left 18 base- runners stranded. Rising to the occasion, however, leading hitter Gary Fisher (.343) and shortstop Jim singled to keep Western's hopes alive. Bruce West then knotted the score at seven apiece with his fourth hit of the afternoon, a two-run double to left, Bobby Gilmore followed with a single to right, but the ball was hit too sharply to score West and runners had to hold at first and third. This brought to the plate Stewart, and the Hayesville sophomore responded immediately with the game-winning safety to right West virtually walked home and the Cats had recorded their ninth victory of the year. Hitting was no problem for either squad as the two teams combined for 27 hits in the contest. The lead was also juggled back and forth as WCU took a 4-1 advantage in the third on RBI's by Eddie Davis, West, and Stewart, but failed to hold it, Erskine's Flying Fleet countered with 3 runs in both the fourth and sixth frames, maintaining a two run edge until the ninth. West's four safeties and three RBI's led the Cats' 17 hit attack, while Stewart added another three singles and a trio of RBI's for the home team. Sophomore pitcher Randy Guy picked up the win in relief of Lester Wright and starter Glenn Glover. Western's next game is at home this Sunday in Cullowhee, when the baseball Cats, presently 9-8, host arch-rivals Appalachian State for the second time this season. Game- time is set for 2:00 pm, with the Mountaineers trying to get revenge for last Sunday's 5-1 thrashing in Boone at the hands of the Catamounts.
