  • Linda Ronstadt sexy and a voice SPRING FESTIVAL SUPPLEMENT Thursday. Mav 6, 1971 3 She sometimes slides into a booth in a Hollywood coffee shop and orders an ice cream soda. "I know I shouldn't have this, but I love to eat, If I don't watch myself, I'll end up like a 400 pound elephant or something," she says. Her name is Linda Ronstadt and she deserves an occasional ice cream soda. They don't seem to affect her shape much either as she sings, braless, barefooted, and in a dress that is "as short asthelawaUows". Her body sways to the music and she virtually melts the microphone and the male portion of the audience when she sings things like Bob Dylan's "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight". In addition to her body, she has an excellent country rock voice, which ranks her with Baez, Though she has just begun to gain national prominence, Miss Ronstadt had a hit record ("Different Drum") in 1967 when she was part of the Stone Poneys. It was when tho group broke up, two years ago, that she began her solo career. And It hasn't always been easy for her. "It's hard for a chick to lead a band," she says, "Most girls are rather passive. They aren't assertive enough to boss people around. I just hate doing things like auditioning musicians. And there are other problems, too. Her sexy stage manner has caused some awk~ ward moments offstage. "A lot of people seem to take me at face value," she says. "Jus: be cause I don't wear a bra, they think I'm loose, free, and easy. I don't go anywhere with- iut a friend anymore." But as much as she complains about it, Miss Ronstadt can't imagine doing anything else. And she does what she does better than anyone you've heard. Barefoot, even. In concert, Thursday, May 13, 9;30 p.m., Reid gym. Badfinger, music 'Come and Get It' Badfinger first came to the attention of the music world when their single "Come and Get It" on the Apple label became a smash hit and was awarded a Gold Record, and their first Apple album, "Magic Christian Music," which includes "Come and Get It,"also was a tremendous success. Their recently released second Apple album, "No Dice," is now high on the charts, and their single from the coUection. No Matter What," also has been awarded a Gold Record, Badfinger is now on Its first American tour, anddrawingre- cord-breaking box-office business. The group started as a local attraction at Swansea dance tells and clubs in England, and then went to London where they became David Garrick's back- mg group. Badfinger, which is also under exclusive contract to Apple as lyricists and composers, is comprised of Pete Ham, guitar, piano and vocals; Joe Molland, guitar and vocals; Tom Evans, bass; and Mike Gibbons, drums. Their manager is a one-time piano player in a Merseyside dance band, Bill Collins, who introduced them to Mai Evans, a friend of The Beatles, Mai liked their sound and was instrumental in Badfinger's signing with Apple in October, 1968, Shortly thereafter they recorded three songs for the Peter Seller s=Ringo Starr film, "The Magic Christian," includingand featuring the theme song, "Come and Get It." The latter, released by Apple as a single, was written and produced by Paul McCartney. They will be in Cullowhee on Friday, May 14, at 8 p.m. in Reid gym.
