  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday May 3, 1973 page 3 Film Colloquim And Competition Will Be Held Monday, May 7th A week long film colloquium and competition will begin Monday May 7th in the Grand Room of the UC. Films will be shown daily at 2:00 and 7:00 pm. Each day will feature films on a specific theme and will include an introduction at 7:00 pm and panel discussion after the showing of the evening film. Monday's films are "Nights of Cabiria" at 2:00 and "Blow- Up" at 7:00. "Nights of Cabiria", directed by Federico Fel- lini, won an Academy Award as Best Foreign Language Film and is the third part of Fel- lini's so called "Trilogy of Solitiude." "Blow-Up," (1966) directed by Michaelangelo Antonioni is a masterpiece to some and a cinematic landmark to others. Its story is a human emotional experience, which reducedto feelings on a purely technical level is a blow-up process, letting the camera see as much as the eye. Tuesday, May 8 will have as its subject the theme of history in film. At 2:00 Garbo's "Ninotcha" (1939)willbe shown It's her first comedy and is a satire on Soviet chauvinism and capitialist conceit. Following "Ninotcha" will be a series of shorts featuring Abbot and Costello and Charlie Chaplin. The evening showing will be W.D. Griffith's "Birth of a Nation"(1915). It's one of the most profitable, controversial and important works in the entire history of the cinema. Griffith, known to most as the "Father ofthe Motion Picture," was the first director to become known to the public at large. Wednesday, May 9, will examine film as art with films of experimental nature including "Allures," "God is Dog spelled Backwards," and "Campus Christi." These Alms were early experimental films from which films as we known them today were developed. A film by French novelist and playright Marguerite Duras will be shown Wednesday evening. Duras creates an uncanny atmosphere that evokes nightmarish and enigmatic power exploding in a mysterious climax of revolutionary destruction. Documentary and propaganda films will be the theme for Thursday May 10. Two films will be shown in the afternoon, "Triumph of Will" and "All Quiet on the Western Front." "Triumph of Will" is by Leni Riefenstahl, who was commissioned by Hitler to cover the Sixth Annual Party Congress in Nuremberg. Its effect on audiences has been nearly hysterical and expresses and exposes the psychology of the Third Reich probably better than any other film of the time. "All Quiet On The Western Front," based on the novel by- Eric Remarque and directed by Lewis Mil stone, is a definitive film statement about the brutality of war. "Mr. Freedom," by William Klien will be Thursday evening's offering. The first Student Film Competition will open Friday, May 10. Competition is open to nonprofessional film makers residing in the southeastern region of the United States. Entries have been submitted in 8 and 16 mm, black and white and color. Traffic Court Twelve cases were ruled upon in Traffic Court last night. Chief Justice William Bird handed out nine verdicts of guilty to Sam Davis, David Tackett, James M. Harrison, Mark Callis, Robert M, Killiam, Harry W. Fawkes, Keith M. Mode, Anne Greene and Jerry Murray. They must pay all fines by May 25. Keith Hensen received a not guilty verdict from the court. Bird granted a directed verdict which is a not guilty ruling to David Hodges. David Arnie secured a continuance until next Wednesday's session of court. Judges for the competition are Mrs. GilbertStenholm, Director of Unusual Films, Bob Jones University; HerbCreecy, Atlanta artist; and Ed Wilson, Western Carolina University student. Awards of $200 foi first place, $100 for second place, and $50 for third place will be given. Judges will view the films on Friday night with a viewing of the award winners. The event is sponsored by the University Center Board, the Lectures, Concerts, and Exhibitions Committee, and the Art Students League. Admission is free to WCU students and LCE subscription series members.
