(Staff photo by R. Paul Smith) Hurdlers Sweep ASU By A 20 Point Win By: Hank Komodowski Sports Editor Easily sweeping to victory in the sprint events and pulling off some surprises in the distance runs, the Western Carolina University track team coasted to a handy 82 1/2 - 62 1/2 victory Tuesday over rival Appalachian State University. The cat runners easily out- scored the Mountaineers 32-2 in the sprints, while taking 10 first and nine second place finishes in the 17- event dual meet. As track coach Paul Jones noted, ' The team was really up for Appalachian and ready to run. The big turning point however, was when Randy Held- erman went and won the mile run, an event they figured to take first and second place finishes in.' Commenting on the rest of the meet, Jones addes, ' The team also performed well as a whole. We were consistent in almost every area.' Western's Jerry Gaines and LeVon Wilson were the top individual scorers with 11 1/2 points apiece. Gaines took first in the long jump (22*7") and the triple jump (49'8 3/4") while Wilson grabbed the premier positions in the 100 and 200-yard dashes with times of 9.9 and 22.1, respectively. Both Cats ran on the victorious 440- relay team. Other firsts recorded by Western runners include the school- record time of Skip Watkins in the high hurdles (14.9) and the 440-yard dash win of Randy Layman, Taking firsts in field events were Johnny Howie in the shot put and Chandler Muse in the high jump. Appalachian thrower Ben Tol- ar set a WCU track stadium record of 203'4" with his toss in the javelin, with Western's Joe Tripp a close second. Mike Flowe of WCU also ran a fine 14.9 in the high hurdles as did Clarence Thomas in the 100 (9.9) and 220 (22.6). Bruce Warshawsky showed strength in the distance events with a second place in the 3-mile run. Western's next meet will be the Quantico Relays on Saturday in Quantico, Va.
