  • Western Carolinian January 26, 1995 Sports arsha Rick Husak Staff Reporter The Lady Cats took on East Tennessee State Saturday night in the fourth game of their six game homestand. Western center, Alicia Brittain, led all rebounds with sixteen in only 21 minutes. Amy Baker and Pam Owens both had twelve points, two steals, and one assist leading the Cats, while Kristy Garrett and Karen Mason played well off the bench. ETSU, led by" DeShawn Blocker with 26 points and 15 rebounds, were too hot for the Lady Cats. They shot 47% from the field, defeating the Cats by a score of 74-63. The Lady Cats drop to 5-9 overall and 1- 4 in the conference. Last week at the Ramsey Center, the Lady Cats battled Appalachian with forward Pam Owens leading all scorers with twenty-two points. She also led the Cats with ten rebounds while shooting 11-11 at the line. ASU took off early, leading 38-27 at half time. In the 2nd period, the Lady Cats fought back, outscoring ASU, but still came up short. Missy Broy scored seventeen points and added six rebounds while LaSha Jackson played well off the bench with six points, six rebounds and three steals. Turnovers and personal fouls hampered the Lady Cats as well as poor field goal shooting-they shot only 36.8% for the game. The final score: Appalachian State - 74; Western Carolina - 68. King scored 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the Cats' 90-77 overtime win over VMI. In the UTC game, he poured in another 27 points and pulled nine boards in a 69-68 victory. His three-pointer with four seconds left gave Western the win. King leads the league in both scoring (25.5) and rebounding (8.3). •Kullum, Gibson Rejoin Team Junior forward Kevin Kullum and sophomore guard Ken Gibson have rejoined the team. Kullum quit the team on January 9, but began practicing again last Wednesday and dressed out for the Furman game Saturday. "I talked with Coach (Dees) and we've got things straightened out," said Kullum. Gibson returned for the Furman game as well. He had been sidelined by a deep thigh bruise suffered prior to the Presbyterian game on January 4. •Recruit Suffers Broken Bone Joey Bryson, the standout shooting guard from West Henderson who signed to play at Western next season, suffered a broken cheekbone in a game last week. He underwent a successful surgery in Hendersonville and expects to return to action within three weeks. When he went down, Bryson was averaging 26 points and nine rebounds per game. Monday night in the Ramsey Center, Marshall came calling as the Lady Cats got off to a fast start with a 4-0 lead. The first half was a constant battle, as there were four lead changes and two ties. With 5.26 left in the first half, the score was tied 25-25 before the Herd, lead by Stephanie Wine (G), leading all scorers with 21 points, put on the finishing touches. After being down by nine at the first half, the Lady Cats battled back to a 43-43 tie, with 6.27 left in the game. The Lady Cats had four people scoring in double digits, including Karen Mason with twelve points off the bench. She also led all rebounds with fourteen. The Lady Cats managed to take the lead, but despite their second half heroics, they could not hang on as the thundering Herd defeated the Lady Cats by the score of 72-69. The Cats, with six seconds remaining on the clock, put up an unsuccessful last digit effort from Karen Mason to send the game into overtime. Jennifer Adams led the Lady Cats with fifteen points, nine rebounds and two assists, as Amy Baker and Missy Broy both put up twelve points for the Cats. The Cats also had three players foul out of the game. This seems to be a problem for the Lady Cats, as ■ hey keep losing their key players when it counts. The next home game will be February 1, against Eastern Kentucky - tip off 7:00 pm intram •The results of the Men's 3-On-3 Basketball Championship Play offs are as follows: All Campus Champion: TheWinners All Campus Runner-up: Cool Cats •The results of the Women's 3- On-3 Basketball Championship Playoffs are as follows: All Campus Champion: Slammers All Campus Runner-up: Hoopin •The results of the Coed Basket ball Freethrow Contest are as follows: All Campus Champions: Sharon Gregory, 23, and Kevin Robinson, 20: 43 shots made out of 50 attempts. •Men's Basketball Freethrows has 2 participating students attempt 25 shots a piece for best total out of 50 attempts.
