  • Co-ed B eauty | !" in MISS JERI BAILEY Charming and delightful Jeri Bailey is our co-ed beauty for the week. Jeri, an English and Professional Writing major is from Spruce Pine. Not only is Jeri interested in Professional Writing from the academic view, but she enjoys writing as a hobby. This blue eyed, blonde haired beauty stands 5'3" tall and weighs 107 pounds. She especially dislikes pseudo-intellectuals. After graduation Jeri plans to enter the teaching field. She is a deserving addition to our list of co-ed beauties. Well, I've learned from watching my husband at work on the outside of the house that the same principle applies outdoors as well. Professors Hard To Get In Hawaii Recruiting faculty members for the University of Hawaii would seem an easy job to anyone who has ever glimpsed the island's travel ads. But, according to the university, there has been some difficulty getting top professors from the mainland because of an old pet- quarantine law. Recently, an anatomy professor turned down a visiting professorship when she learned her dog would be lounging for 120 days in quarantine kennels. A psychology professor is having second thoughts about a position; his wife is upset over the thought of their poodle being quarantined. And university officials say there are other similar cases. Well, professors have rights, too, don't they? Friday, April 3, 1964 Page 4 Films This Week Dean Stockwell Stars In Sons And Lovers Tonight The remaining movies in the gallery of Hunter Library have been cancelled. Mrs. Buchanan regretfully announced that the gallery will be in use for the remainder of the quarter for the end of the year conferences. Movies will resume in the gallery beginning with the first summer session and a schedule will be posted as usual. On Tuesday, April 7, "The Wackiest Ship in the Army" will be shown in Hoey Auditorium. The film, in technicolor and cinemascope, is a slight modification of Richard Murphy's play of the same name and is a naval farce portrayed with diligent humor. Jack Lemmon, the skipper of the wackiest ship, knows considerably less about sailing than he knows about New Contest Is Announced For Guitarists The Gretsch Guitar Company has launched one of the most interesting and imaginative contests ever offered to non- profesional folk guitarists. Stimulated by the growing number of talented people who are interested in folk music, they have created the Gretsch National Folk Guitar Contest, offering a 20th Century-Fox recording contract as First Prize. In addition, there will be two Second Prizes (one for solo artist and one for performing group), consisting of instruments, and 72 Third Prizes of 20th Century-Fox long-playing record albums. The aspiring folk musicians who enter the contest need only prepare a type or record (minimum two minutes) of their best number and send it to Gretsch. The contest will be judged by some of the leading folk artists in America who will listen to each contestant individually with the greatest concern for talent. Naturally, everyone with a yen for folk music is urged to enter the contest—teenagers, college students, adults. It will not only be a great opportunity for them to record their talent, but an even greater opportunity to win a professional recording contract with 20th Century-Fox Records. Ricky Nelson and Mike Kel- lin do all the wrong things to get the right guffaws, like getting knocked overboard by the sweep of the boom. Lemmon drags them out of the drink and bewails the fact that he has been given the ancient sail boat to command. His troubles have only begun, however, when he is ordered to sail the relic from the safety of an Australian port to Port Moresby, for some reason that still remains a secret The latter part of the movie takes on a more serious tone when the good ship "Echo" contacts the enemy. Most of the attempted drama Is centered aronud their efforts to place an Australian coast- watcher behind the enemy lines. Meanwhile, the crew disguises their ship as a native trading vessel and harasses the Japanese. Unfortunately, the drama is not first class and it barely scratches the surface of the courageous exploits of the Australian coast-watchers during World War II. The movie closes with a return to the farcial tone it began with as Lemmon and his crew slaughter the Japanese. Show time for "The Wackiest Ship" is 7:30 p.m. and admission is 25c.—L S The film verision of D. H. Lawrence's Sons and Lovers plays this evening in Hoey. The film stars Dean Stockwell as the artist-son of a British coal mining family. The boy is dominated by a possessive mother, beautifully acted by Wendy Hiller, who wants to keep her son close to her. Trever Howard is cast as Stockwell's father, and Mary Ure appears as the boy's mistress who manages to untie some of mother's apron strings. The film is well directed and beautifully acted. The black and white cinemascope photography captures the beauty of the English hillside. Sons and Lovers is worth much more than the 25c admission price. It begins at 8 p.m.—B.
