  • t* ' -an Mjeai i m i««in features April 28,1999 Support Your Local Art Student Commentary by Phoebe Esmon Features Editor It ain't easy being an art student. All your non-art major friends don't understand how it's really important to stay up all until 5:00 a.m. painting. Your parents get worried and contact the counseling center when you call asking for money to buy 501bs of plaster and silicone caulk. And worst of all you end up sitting cheek to cheek (and I do mean cheek) with some pretty interesting characters, due to the colossal lack available of studio space. Now, some in our audience may not understand. To some, an art students, let alone a student art show, may rank right up there with elementary school musical Christmas pageants, which probably rank right up there (in terms of pure enjoyment) with having your teeth drilled without anesthetic . I will hitherto attempt to change your mind. There are purists I have run into, who earnestly beat their chests, proclaiming that there hasn't been any really good art produced since the 17th century. So why do they need to go see a room full of contemporary art, much of which they couldn't possibly understand since they have obviously been asleep for ohhh...299 years. One of my favorite groups of art anti- enthusiasts are the anti-aesthetes. These are people who make a point out of liking only what's ugly, which is not to say that there is no good ugly art...there just isn't as much of it. These folks would turn down a Da Vinci if they could get their hands on a good example of a Black Velvet Elvis. The Belk Gallery (located in the Belk Building) is currently playing host to the Art Students League Student Art Exhibition. The annual exhibition showcases the best student work from the preceding academic year. Although more work was submitted than ever before, this year's show is actually quite small. It's so small that when awards (and there were a lot of awards) were handed out at the show's opening on LY rKC-JEfM f TH5 It students league ammual studemt art ekhtot10i-j A{>rili2-M.}y7 M Gallery uNo Breast jor the Wicked}* April 18, those who received nothing felt, well, a little left out. Best in Show was awarded to Daniel P. Monaghan for his book arts project entitled "Little Black Box." Drew Kirkpatrick got Best Painting for "You Can't fall OFF the Floor." The Diane Withrow Coyle Drawing Award went to Jada Hansen, as did the best Drawing award. Best Book Arts was won by Eliot Lytle, for "The Illusion of Permanence," and Michele Humphrey won Best Photograph for "Mediterranean Sea." (In interest of space, some award recipients have not been included here.) The Student Art Exhibition will be in the Belk Gallery through May 7, ( a.k.a. the last day of classes). I know I've said this before, but it really isn't that far to the Belk Gallery from pretty much anywhere on campus. It may be hard to believe, but some of the students whose work is represented in this show will go on to shape what we know as art from here on out. And besides, you expect us to go see your silly little sporting events... FREE RADIO + S1250! Fundraiser open to student groups & organizations.
