  • sSfZX-dJ^L western ■ • • ^Carolinian Indoor Track to Begin Season by Daniel Hooker Coming off a successful cross-country season, coach Danny Williamson and his indoor track team will look to continue the success. The team that Williamson has this year is one of the best in the Southern Conference and in Western Carolina history. "This is probably, all in all, the most complete team that we've had here at Western Carolina in my 12 years here," commented Danny Williamson. "Track is different from cross-country as there are a lot more people involved," noted Williamson. "Instead of looking to one person, we will look for a total team effort. We want to be able to score in all the events." He added, "We're looking for everyone to contribute." The women's team has only two seniors this year: LaSha Jackson, a two-sport participant, and Robyn Stockunas. Both Jackson and Stockunas do weight events, but Jackson also throws. Williamson stated that the women should excel in the throwing, middle distance (where several of the cross-country runners place), and jumping events. "[The women] are good in the sprints and hurdle events as well as the middle distance, jumping, and weights. We have a pretty complete team," said Williamson. Sophomore Jenny Warfford will look to carry-over her great year from cross-country into the track season. In Southern Conference competition, the Lady Cats were the conference champions in the outdoor season last year. Accompanying West- em at the top, according to Williamson, will be Appalachian State, Chattanooga, and East Tennessee State . On the men's side, four seniors will try to better the second place finish that they posted in the outdoor season. All of the seniors, Bill Baldwin, Brian Clark, Turner Norris, and Collin Webster, run the distance events for track. Williamson noted that the men's side was Jay Clark—Track Human. Photo by T.K. Roberts. equally as strong as the women's. He stated that the sprints, jumping, and hurdle events should be strong. "We also have outstanding talent in the middle distance and throwing events, but just not as much depth," said Coach Williamson. Western's men should be around the top ofthe Southern Conference. Like in the women's competition, Appalachian State, East Tennessee, and the VMI teams should also be tough. Coach Danny Williamson commented, "We just hope that we get better every week. Our goal is to win the Southern Conference championship." He went on to add, "That is a big task that lays before us. Past that, we will look to get a few individuals to qualify for the NCAA Championships, which is very tough to do." The season opens up this Sunday, December 7, in Clemson, S.C. The Catamounts will make a return trip down in January and in February in their quest for the Championships. Fayetteville Homecoming for Whitmore i Catamounts take third in Coca-Cola Classic by Daniel Hooker Western's trip to Fayetteville over the Thanksgiving accomplished two things for 6'6" junior Dondrell Whitmore. He had the opportunity to play in the Coca-Cola Classic tournament with the Cats and was right at home for Turkey Day. A product of nearby Seventy-First High School of Fayetteville, Whitmore had family and friends in attendance to watch him and Western overcome a first-game slump to come back and take third place in the holiday tourney. Head Coach Phil Hopkins stated that in the first game, the pressures of playing in front of a home crowd made Whitmore a little tense. However, on the second day, Hopkins was pleased with his looseness and play. "I thought he played well. I was really happy for him," commented Hopkins. "He gives us such a lift out there." Whitmore only managed five points against UNC-Wilmington but grabbed 12 boards in the Cats' loss to the Seahawks. He rebounded against Charleston Southern to score 11 points, accompanied with team- high nine rebounds to help the Catamounts to the win. Dondrell stated that he was nervous playing before the fairly large crowd in the new Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville. "It was all right until everybody started calling and were talking about it. 'When you go out there, don't be nervous!'" noted Whitmore. "I told myself, 'Naw, I am going to try not to be.' But, somehow... it caught up with me." "I just think it's a shame that more people from Seventy-First High School didn't come out to see Dondrell," noted Hopkins. "If that high school has got any one person that they should be proud of both academically and athletically, it's him." Saturday, the Catamounts ran away from the Charleston Southern Buccaneers, 20-0, in the first seven minutes of the game to finish out the Coca-Cola Classic basketball tournament with a 79-68 win and a third place finish. Senior swing-man Bobby Phillips went 8-17 from the floor enroute to 22 points, and seven rebounds to lead the Cats to the victory. He was the lone Catamount to make the All-Tournament team. Whitmore was the only other Cat to make it into double digits, with 11 points and nine rebounds, but Joel Fleming and Derrick Drummond both added nine apiece. The Catamounts built a comfortable lead of 20, but the fiesty Bucs made a run to cut it to 8 with four minutes to go in the game. Yet, Western iced the game down the stretch from the free-throw line. Head Coach Phil Hopkins commented that the performance against Charleston Southern was a good bounce back from the disappointing loss to UNC-Wilmington the day before. Freshman walk-on Chad Wall scored his first point on the year and the last for the Cats from the foul line. Despite putting three players into double-digits, the Catamounts lost the first game ofthe tourney, which was also the first game to be held in the new Fayetteville Crown Coliseum 72-60, to the UNC- Wilmington Seahawks. The Cats led at half-time, but were outscored 41-28 in the second half by Wilmington in the loss. Jarvis Graham led the team with 12 points, followed by Joel Fleming (11) and Bobby Phillips (10). Dondrell Whitmore had a tourney high 12-rebounds in the losing effort. Western Carolina also defeated Austin Peay 71-57 on November 25 in the Ramsey Center. Bobby Phillips had 24 points, and Dondrell Whitmore added 11 rebounds. Derrick Drummond dished out seven assists, and Jarvis Graham had two blocked shots. * J r\jt i i \ I i N*.
