Suddenly his dreams were shattered by a squeaking sound. He thought it was his mother's voice. "Ma and Pa must be quarreling politics," he thought. "Ma's bound to get the best of it, though, 'cause she's a Democrat and a woman. Pa is only a man Republican." Mousie listened; the squeaking sound died away. In its stead came a whine, which lasted for several minutes, then a gasping noise. Mousie was reminded of the sounds Grandpa Rat had made as he lay dying in a mouse trap. He now heard a moan— a moan more mournful than the song of a winter wind. He could stand the suspense no longer. He peered from behind his curtain. What he saw caused the soft hairs on his back to become porcupine like, and his tail became as stiff as a poker. Mousie fainted! He had witnessed a terrible sight. Out in the auditorium there were several human beings—the kind that wear dresses. One of them was standing on the stage wringing her hands, her face was red, her eyes were wild, her knees were trembling and out of her open mouth came strange gurgling noises. The other things with dresses on sat in the audience, and they were smiling as if they were enjoying her agony. Mousie's heart was young and tender; so he fainted. Mousie, being a very young rat, is not to be blamed if he did not quite understand that the things he saw were voice pupils, and that the sounds, he heard were beautiful lyric, mezzo, and alto voices. However, if he wishes to avoid another such fright, he will have either to move his bed or to cultivate a love for good music, for the Voice Club, under the direction of Miss Feagans, plans to have these practice recitals regularly.
