The Bulldogs started their season against the Newberry Indians, posting an impressive 33-13 victory. The Citadel offense rattled off 274 yards on the ground while adding 71 yards through the air against the over-matched Indians. The Citadel spurted out to a 30-0 lead before Newberry scored. In their second game in this young season, the late score of senior Justin Skinner, the Bulldog's field goal kicker, lifted The Citadel over a tough South Florida team, which a week before had scored 80 points on Kentucky Wesley an, 10-7. One of the most dangerous players for the Bulldogs is sophomore multi-purpose special teams performer, Carlos Frank. In the first two games, Frank has compiled 349 total offensive yards, an average of 174.5 yards a game—tops in the Southern Conference. In reaching this mark, he has also scored two touchdowns off punt returns and leads the league with an 18.9-yard average per return. Also in Frank's arsenal are kick-off returns and receiving. He ranks third in the league in kick-off return average and is the league-leader scoring average with 9 points a game. The Citadel, as a team, ranks fourth in the league in rushing offense, averaging 204 yards per game. Leading the Bulldogs' rushing attack is junior tailback Antonio Smith. Against Newberry, Smith had 22 carries for 146 yards but was restricted to 64 yards on 20 carries against South Florida. He notched a touchdown in both games. The Bulldogs' offense appears to rely heavily upon their rushing game, running the option out of multiple I formation sets. In the Liberty game, the Catamounts held the Flames to 23 yards on the ground in 26 carries, which ranks them first in the Southern Conference in rushing defense, setting up the classic run power versus the run stopper. The Citadel's Carlos Frank already has two punt returns for touchdowns this season. "The option is hard to stop. But, stopping the run, that is [the Cats'] whole philosophy. They'll come out and fight," said Head Coach Bill Bleil about the Cats' defense. The Catamounts' offense, which was sluggish at the start of the opening game against Liberty, ended up rattling off 369 yards total offense. Josh Brooks passed for 256 yards in 44 attempts with 24 completions. The Citadel defense is ranked second in the Southern Conference in pass efficiency defense, holding their opponents to 392 yards on 35 completions. Against the run, the Bulldogs rank fourth, allowing only 91.5 yards per game. "The Citadel's defense will always play extremely well. Don Powers does a great job with them," noted Bleil. He added, "They do a really good job, and they are very sound. And Don's a really good football coach, and he will have them ready to play." The game will be the second-straight night game in E. J. Whitmire Stadium, Saturday, starting at 6 p.m. Beaches Tanning Salon Go Cats! Cats Had Their Chance by Donald Costello Western suffered from a severe case of red zone syndrome in the 17-10 loss to Liberty Saturday night. The Cats were within the 20-yard line four times and were only able to convert for one touchdown. On Western's second possession of the second half, Liberty seemed unable to stop the Catamount offensive attack. On second down and ten from the Liberty 14-yard line, quarterback Josh Brooks threw a deep pass into the end zone that was picked off by Liberty's Ramsey Moore. The inception thwarted an 85 yard drive that began at the Catamount's own one- yard line. A touchdown would have brought Western to within three points. Western's next possession, following a great defensive stand by the Catamounts, ended in similar fashion with Brooks throwing the ball directly into the hands of the Liberty defender on the L.U. 15-yard line. "We can't throw consecutive interceptions within the red zone and expect to win," said Head Coach Bill Bleil. The following drive once again saw the Cats march down the field untamed to the Liberty 19-yard line. A bad snap on a field goal attempt threw off the timing of the kicking team and Ken Hinsley's attempt was blocked. Three straight possessions, three red zone appearances, no points. Some credit, however, must be given to the tenacity of the Liberty defense. Liberty Head Coach Sam Rutigliano said that he has never coached a game where his defense came up with so many big plays. Referring to Western's dominating offense, Rutigliano said, "If you can always hold a team like Western's to only ten points, then you should win every game." Rutigliano concluded, "I'm glad we played them early in the season...Western is going shock some teams this year." Western's last chance to win the game came with 2:01 remaining. A seven-play, 32-yard, drive ended when Western had fourth down and nine yards to go from the Liberty 21. Again Brooks threw the ball into the hands of Liberty, but the ball was batted into the air and Kenya Crooks came down with it. No yards were gained on the play as defeat became a reality for a dejected Catamount squad. No doubt about it, Western should have doused the Flames. "We just put ourselves in some situations that we couldn't overcome," said Bleil. "If you look at the numbers, we should have won the game."
