  • Outdoor If you are interested, this area has a variety of outdoor scenery. From clear blue streams to spectacular mountain summits, WCU offers many beautiful road trips within a hours drive. The Blue Ridge Parkway is less than 25 miles away. This scenic highway has many overlooks that rise above 4000 feet. Waterrock Knob (7 miles north from Balsam Gap) and Richland Balsam (15 miles south of Balsam Gap) are excellent spots for a view of the sunset. Beginning where the Parkway ends, the Great Smoky Mountain National Park is the favorite of many campers and hikers. It offers many trails for overnight backpacking and short hikes for day climbers. Laced with streams and covered with over 300 different kinds of vegetation, this park is one of the most traveled in the country. Clingman's Dome (in the middle of the National Park) is one of the best views in the area. Bridging the borders of Tennessee and North Carolina, the dome rises above 6000 feet and gives, a panoramic view of the Great Smokies You can see well over a hundred miles from this vantage point on a clear day (only in the fall, spring, and winter; in the summer it is too hazy). Still interested? Talk to anyone working at Cullowhee Outfitters if you want details of equipment to prepare for any outside excursion. Always take extra clothing and bring plenty of food (these hills are extremely steep in places and you will need lots of energy). A flashlight and map are hand v for hikes in excess of five miles in case vou underestimate the amount of daylight (rule of thumb: there is less than an hour of light after sunset). Talk to the people you may meet on the trails of other points of interest in the area. There are dozens of outdoor trips that can be made within this area that offer a special passtime unique to Western North Carolina. JIM ALLMAN Agent 43 W.
