  • Alpha Phi Alpha, Nu Zeta Chapter Alpha Phi Alpha was founded December 4, 1906, at Cornell University in Ithica, N. Y. by a group of students who desired to maintain a more intimate contact with one another than the classroom study permitted. Thus, being the first predominately black fraternity their ideals are high, as they continue to promote brotherhood, scholarship, and high moral character among their members. Their colors are black and old gold and they are "Servants of All". Delta Sigma Phi, Delta Omicron Chapter- Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity was founded December 10, 1889, as a cooperative movement of the students from the City College of New York University. Delta Omicron affiliated nationally in December of 1959. Delta Sig ranks among the top 20 fraternities in membership as well as number of chapters. The two major social functions are Carnation Ball and Shipwreck. They are nationally known as the Fraternity of Engineered Leadership. Kappa Alpha, Delta Alpha Chapter- Living up to the ideals of Robert E. Lee and the South was the purpose of the founding of the Kappa Alpha Order in December, 1865, at Washington and Lee University. Along with furthering the traditions of the Old South, the brothers hold a traditional Old South Ball, and participate in intramural sports. Lambda Chi Alpha-Beta Zeta Chapter- The Western Carolina Colony was established as Sigma Tau Sigma Local in February, 1968, and became a chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha in February 1969. The Lambda Chi's are proud to be the recipients of the President's Council Scholarship trophy for the highest quality point ratio for nine years. Campus highlights are the annual raft race and sorority kidnap in the fall. In the spring the social highlight of Lambda Chi Alpha is Crescent Weekend. Lamba Chi Alpha prides itself with it's strong membership envolvement on campus and within the community. Lambda Chi Alpha does not have pledges, but associate members, where the concept of fraternity education is emphasized. Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Theta Lambda Chapter Omega Psi Phi Fraternity was founded November 17,1911 at Howard University in Washington, D. C. by three students and a faculty member in an effort to propogate the spirit of true brotherhood and bring together men with similar high ideals. Omega Psi Phi is the world's second oldest college based fraternity founded by black men. We stress the four principles upon which Omega is built- manhood, scholarship perserverance, and uplift. Our chapter was founded fall of 1979 at WCU and has established the Mardi Gras and drives for the United Negro College Fund and The United Way as annual events. The Theta Lambda Greeks Chapter has brothers active in many facets of campus activities from honor societies to athletics Our color* are purple and gold and our motto is "friendship is essential to the soul". Pi Kappa Alpha, Zeta Zi Chapter Pi Kappa Alpha was founded on March 1.1868, at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. The fraternity stresses high moral Standards and scholarship. Pi Kappa Alpha, known as "P1KA", was chartered on the campus of Western Carolina University on February 12,1967. The highlight of the Pi Kappa Alpha year is the annual Dream Girl Weekend. Phi Lambda Phi, Omega Zeta Chapter Pi Lambda Phi was founded locally on January 28, 1978. Being the newest social fraternity on campus, we bring in many new ideas to enlighten the Greek system at Western. The " Pilams " strive for high scholarship, contributing to many charitable events and above all feel that their closeness in brotherhood is their main quality in the fraternity. Pi Lambda Phi was founded at Yale University on March 21, 1895. The Philams are proud to be recipients of the Presidents Council Scholarship Trophy for the 1979-80 academic year. Tau Kappa Epsilon, Zeta Omicron Chapter A college fraternity such as TKE, is a select group of men with similar ideas, hopes, and purposes bonded together by deep friendship and mutual understanding. Tau Kappa Epsilon has a spirit of genuine democracy and chooses its members "not for wealth, rank, or honor, but for personal worth and character." TKE, " the fraternity of life," was founded at Illinois Weslyan U. on January 10, 1899. Theta Xi, Kappa Phi Chapter The purpose of Theta Xi Fraternity is to provide a university home environment for its active members in which fellowship and alumni guidance leads to wholesome mental, moral, physical and spiritual growth. It was founded a Renselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, on April 29, 1864. For those women curious about sororities at Western, the following is a list of the five National sororities along with a brief description: Alpha XI Delta - Becoming an Alpha Xi will involve exciting activities throughout the school year. These activities include the annual wheelbarrow race, Golden Weekend, raft race. Special Olympics, and the Miss Catamount Pageant. Alpha Xi Delta is proud to have won the women's Recreational Association Award for the past 5 consecutive years. Founded in 1893, the Alpha Xi's National Philanthropy is Pittman Hall, a home for delinquent girls, and their sister pin is the golden quill. Their colors are rose and green, their flowers is the Pink Killarney Rose, and the National Philanthropy is Speech and Hearing. To be a Delta Zeta is to be active in campus activities such as intramurals, bloodmobile, and homecoming weekend. We commit ourselves to hig'n ideals and goals. To be honored is to be a Delta Zeta. We are located on the fourth floor of Walker. Sigma Kappa, Gamma Rho Chapter To be a Sigma Kappa is to grow through participation as we visit Webster Home, enjoy Pike's Peak, Parent's Day, the pie throw , and many other activities. Sigma Kappa, with their founding in 1874 is one of the oldest Greek letter organizations. The white violet as her flower and the Gold Triangle as her pin, Sigma Kappa stresses leadership, scholarship, and high ideals. Pi Mu, Gamma Mu Chapter- When you become a Phi Mu you gain three goals: to serve others, scholarship, and friendship and understanding. Phi Mu's are active in social service projects such as our Washboard Band, American Cancer drive, and an Easter Party for underpriviledged children. Phi Mu is the second oldest fraternal organization for women in the United States. It has grown from three women in 1852 to 65,000 members and its scope is international. Our flower is the enchantress carnation, our colors are rose and white, and our pin is a gold shield overlaid with a black shield bearing two bands, three stars, and hands clasping a heart. The Phi Mu's are located on the third floor of Walker Hall. Zeta Tau AlphaZeta Iota Chapter- Zeta Tau Alpha was founded in 1898 and is currently an international fraternity with 175 chapters and fourth National ranking. Our Philanthropy is the National Association for Retarded Citizens., and we participate in money making projects and work with kids at the Mental Health Clinic. The Zeta's are an active sorority and you'll find us in chorus, band, Senate, Homecoming court and various other clubs and organizations. Our colors are steel grey and turquoise blue, and our mascot is the owl. Throughout the year we enjoy Parents Weekend, spring cookouts, a Christmas Party, and our Crown Ball. For all interested or curious women there will be a MEET THE GREEKS program Wednesday evening, August 26, at 7:00 p.m. in Forsyth Auditorium. There will be brief explanations of formal rush rules and procedures, a question and answer period, descriptions of sorority life in general, and a skit performed by the Panhellenic council. Immediately following the MEET THE GREEKS program will be a candlelight ceremony to kick off Formal Rush 1981. If you're curious about sororities and wonder what it's all about, this is the time to get your questions answered!
