  • i man features Summer '99, Vol. 2 Crossroads Open Mic Night by Jeff Leatherwood Staff Writer Since the demise of Western Carolina University's open mic night, which suffered from low publicity and poor attendance before cancellation in the mid-90s, local musicians have lost much of their audience. Although acoustic jams and talent shows have persisted, no forum has existed for rock, jazz, and blues musicians to perform live electric music in front of Jackson County audiences. Amplifiers and drum kits are forbidden objects in dormitories, although loud stereo systems can still belt out techno and death metal with impunity. So what's a poor aspiring Jeff Beck or Neil Peart to do? Since opening its doors this year, Crossroads of Sylva has provided Cullowhee with a much-needed jolt in terms of concerts and activities. Star attractions such as Leon Russell and Savoy Brown have been duly reported by the Carolinian in the past. Local bands like the Miles Reeder Quartet and Hammerloop have offered jazz Lil' Brian & The Zydeco Travelers by Jeff Leatherwood Staff Writer Vocalist Brian Terry will spearhead his group, Lil' Brian and the Zydeco Travelers, in a July 20 free concert arranged by University Center and Summer School. The band's proficiency lies in highly danceable Zydeco music with funk influences, a brand of music that Terry has named Z-Funk. Their second album , appropriately titled "Z-Funk," received high critical praise in Blues Revue magazine for its blend of 70s soul, traditional Zydeco swamp music, and Motown. Lil' Brian and his band already visited WCU during February of this year, and their subsequent return might serve as an indication of how well they were received. All five of the bands members are in their 20s, and are considered fairly sophisticated for their age in terms of musical taste. In addition to singing in styles reminiscent of James Brown and Bob Marley, Brian Terry also plays the traditional instrument of Cajun music, the accordion. His family members, Patrick and Kenneth Terry perform on electric guitar and keyboards respectively, while Emerson Jackson plays bass guitar alongside drummer Charles LaMark. The band also expresses itself in hop-hop and rap verse, but generally stays close to the sounds of jazz and funk. The concert begins at 6 p.m. on the University Center Lawn, weather permitting, so come and see Lil' Brian play the squeeze box. and classic rock to the area. Mondays find teenagers meeting at the club with a closed bar, while Tuesday is Karaoke Night. And now, every Wednesday, Crossroads has been hosting an open- mic night using the finest sound equipment available in Western North Carolina. Talented singer-songwriters who play acoustic guitars are a common enough occurence at Crossroads, but the sound stage also provides drummers with a place to set up their hardware, and amps are strategically placed to allow guitarists, bassists, and even keyboardists to plug in and jam. It adds up to so much variety as hard rock trio Catapult storms the stage for twenty minutes, to be followed by the lighter sounds of a New Age Celtic duo consisting of guitar and violin. Local bands such as The Blues Bombers also make guest appearances. The open mic night also provides a place for musicians to meet and form new bands. Sign-ups for the Open-Mic begin at 8:30 p.m., and each performer is allowed an average of four songs or performances. Call 631-3322 for more details. FREE RADIO + S1250!
