Departments Every year, students at various universities across the country run into a problem: they've been majoring in a subject for a couple of years, and decide that they want to change majors because of something they didn't know previously, such as job opportunities or the fact that they feel they just weren't cut out for the field they're in. This year the Carolinian, in the name of freshmen everywhere, has decided to run a brief listing of different departments on campus and the career opportunities offered by these. So if you haven't made up your mind yet as to your major field, maybe this will help give you some idea of what you would like to go into. Arts and Sciences Foreign Languages Our world is growing smaller day by day. Technology, the media, interdependence for the necessities of daily life - these forces are drawing nations closer together. Communication is the key to coping with these new realities. Because we have to compete -economically and politically - as never before, we can no longer rely solely on English for this communication. Now and in the coming decade, more than at any other time in our nation's history, learning other languages and cultures is essential. The Modern Foriegn Languages Department offers B.A. and B.S. degree programs in French, German, and Spanish, with minors also available in those languages. The curriculum includes courses in Cherokee, French, German, Latin, and Spanish. SLOAN'S BOOK SHOP 281 N. MAIN ST.. WAYNESVILLE, N.C. 28786 P.O. WINE & MIXES Welcome New and Returning Students Telephone 586-4522 The Intensive Language Program, which uses the Dartmouth Method and stresses oral skills in French, German, or Spanish, is open to students who want to begin a new language and acquire basic fluency in only two semesters. To improve language skills and deepen the understanding of other cultures, travel and study abroad are encouraged. On occasion, the Department sponsors group programs abroad for this purpose. In addition, advisers can help work out a program tailored to the student's specific needs. The Department has a well-equipped language laboratory and extensive materials recorded on tape, record, and films, as well as video tape facilities and a sensitive short-wave reciever to monitor international broadcasts. Learning another language may enhance career opportunities, both abroad and in the U.S., where millions have a native tongue other than English. To those who know another language, an ever-expanding variety of job opportunities is open, especially in business and government. For further information on foreign language programs please see Dr. Paul Haberland in the Department of Modern Foreign Languages office, McKee 113, or call extension 7241. History The Department of History at WCU offers both the B.A. and B.S. degrees on the undergraduate level as well as the M.A. in American History on the graduate level. The department offers courses ranging from ancient Greece and Rome to contemporary England and Germany in European History, from the colonial United States to Vietnam in American History, and from Black Africa to Latin America in Third World History. Because of our geographical location, students can also participate in courses that study the Cherokee Indians and local Appalachian culture. The study of history is excellent preparation for many careers. A survey of recent history graduates of WCU reveals that they found careers in business and industry, education, government, law journalism, and religion.' Philosophy andReligon Most students have not had the opportunity to take courses in philosophy or religous studies in high school but are curious about these subjects. These interests were the guiding principle in the design of the 100-200 level general education courses in philosophy and religous studies. A B.A. and B.S. in Special Studies major in philosophy is available in addition to a minor in philosophy. Philosophy is an excellent background for professional training in law, business, the ministry, or medicine. For further information contact Professor Michael Jones, Music/ English 152, or telephone 227- 7262. Earth Sciences The Earth Sciences Department is interdisciplinary covering both geography and geology. Geographers study climates, soils, landforms, water resourses, manuiactunng, farming, cities, religions, languages, transportation, or any area that deals with our physical ana human environment. Geography is a unique discipline because of its locational perspective. Geology, on the other hand, is the science of the earth and life and now they have changed through time. Geologists analyze landforms, internal processes (volcanoes, earthquakes), natural resources, (mindfields, energy, etc.) evolution of The d? rtS 0nginS t0 name b«" a few.
