Sports Cats Picked Fifth Optimistic- WCU Head Football Coach Bob Waters gives instructions to new recruits during a practice session last spring. Waters hopes to capitalize on some highly-touted freshmen along with proven veterans when he unveils the 1980 edition of the Catamount grid team in Western's season opener against East Carolina September Fifth. After a one year absence, the University of Tennessee- Chattanooga is expected to regain the top spot in the 1981 Southern Conference final football standings, according to a pre-season poll of the conference's head football coaches and sports information directors. The Moccasins failed to win at least a share of the conference championship for the first time last season since they joined the league in 1977. UTC won the title outright in 1979 and shared the crown in 1977 with VMI and in 1978 with Furman. This is the fourth consecutive poll in which the Moccasins have been favored to capture the conference's football championship. Second year coach Bill Oliver's team received nine of a possible 16 first place votes and nosed out defending champion Furman by five total points for the favorite roll. The Mocs compiled 93 points in the voting with 98 points representing a perfect ballot. No one rated them lower than second place. Furman, which breezed through the 1980 conference schedule with a perfect 7-0-0 record, received five first place votes and was a close second in total points with 88. The Paladins were picked to finish either first or second on all but one ballot. The Citadel, which will play without the Conference's 1980 Player of the Year, Stump Mitchell, received one first place vote, but was a distant third in total points with 67. The Bulldogs were pushed for third place by Appalachian State with 66 points. The Mountaineers finished third last season and were obviously tagged the darkhorse in the balloting, despite the loss of the record smashing aerial duo of Steve Brown to Rick Beasley. Western Carolina was a solid choice for a repeat as the conference's fifth place team. The Catamounts, improved offensively but rebuilding defensively, received over half the fifth place votes. VMI has All America candidate Floyd Allen at tailback and Coach Bob Thalman's positive attitude, but for the third season in a row will open with an untested quarterback and is expected to finish in sixth place for the third time in four seasons. For the first time since joining the Southern Conference in 1977, Marshall is expected to escape the cellar as the Thundering Herd out balloted East Tennessee State by five points for seventh place. Davidson College is not eligible for the conference title as it participates as a NCAA Division 1-AA school in football. The results of the pre-season poll, tabulated on a 7-6-5- 4-3-2-1 basis, appears below with first place votes in parentheses. Coaches and SIDs did not vote for their respective schools. 1. UT-Chattanooga (9) 93 points 2. Furman (5) 88 points 3. The Citadel (I) 67 points 4. Appalachian State (1) 66 points 5. Western Carolina 49 points 6. VMI 38 points 7. Marshall 26 points 8.
