Resolved, That the American Association for the Advancement of Science, recognizing the importance of the preservation in its original condition of some portion of the hardwood forests of the southern Appalachian region, respectfully petitions Congress to provide for the establishment in that region of a National Forest Reserve. Adopted by the American Forestry Association at its New York meeting - June 25; by the Council of the Americe.n Association for the Advancement of Science at its New York meeting June 28, 1900.

Various organizations expressed support of an Appalachian National Park and a bill before Congress authorizing the purchase of four million acres for that purpose. A movement for a national park in the Appalachians was spearheaded by Appalachian National Park Association, formed in 1899. The association raised public awareness of the issue, but disbanded before the formation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
