XjJIXjJLj To provide for a suitable national park in the Appalachian Mountains for the perpetual preservation of the forests and wild life of the Appalachians and for recreational purposes Whereas all of the great national parks of the Nation are situated in the western part of the United States, and there has not been set apart any area of the eastern Appalachian Mountains for the purpose of preserving their natural phenomena, the great forests with which they are clothed, and the wild life and flora peculiar to them, for the purpose of scientific study ; and ihtjo Whereas in the Appalachian Range of mountains there is to be found in North Carolina and contiguous territory in Tennessee what is known as the Great Smoky Range, the greatest mountain mass east of the Mississippi River, and representing to the largest extent all of the natural phenomena and flora incident to this great mountain range; and
