  • Page 4 Opinion October 14,1993 Western Carolinian Letters African-American female responds Dear Editor, Normally, I do not dignify such remarks and allegations with a response. However, if I do not, you remain at a great injustice because you seem to be an "ignorant (person) with a small (mind) who can't accept anything foreign or different." It is indisputable that Lyndon B. Johnson initiated the Great Society Programs. But, it was not to "put minorities on a equal level with whites." Look a little deeper into the situation. It was for personal gain (as was Abraham Lincoln's "freeing of the slaves"). And if you did your research properly, you would know that more whites benefit from these "Great Society" programs than do minorities combined. (SIXTY PERCENT TO BE EXACT!) And to say thatjohnson's programs reversed the inequality— take a look in the media, in the communities, even on Western's campus. I really don't think it has reversed. "Imagine That!" Please excuse my frankness: But what the hell does men in white robes have to do with minorities going to a Sigma Phi Epsilon party? Absolutely nothing! And I must inform you, there is quite a bit of difference between "racially exclusive clubs and organizations" and clubs and organizations that promote pride and dignity within a race. Too many times, people on the outside-looking-in mistake pride for arrogance and separation for segregation. And if you can honestly say that the history and present on-goings in the NAACP and KKK promote the same type of racial pride, I will personally join the KKK. Oh, but I can't. Yousee, theNAACP is open to anyone of any race and any religion; the KKK is not. In fact, the origi nal NAACP was founded with whites on it. UNDERSTAND?! And yes, I am an African-American. And I refer to myself as an African-American. This is so because I am proud of my African Heritage and am also proud of my American Heritage. And therefore contrary to what you and the former Library of Congress, whose name you failed to mention, I will not drop one for the other; they both make me one. And last, but certainly not least, minorities have their own beauty pageants and scholarships because for so many years the white man dominated and did not give us and still do not give us the credit we deserve. So when you see special groups, programs and funding, don't get upset. We are simply rebuilding what the white man has continually tried to destroy. You are right this nation was founded on the premise that all men are created equal. But did you forget about the Jim Crow laws enforced by the same men who created this country? I do not condone unnecessary violent actions. However, everything that happens between a Black and a white is not racially motivated. And tocompare the LA riots with thegoingson at the Sigma Phi Epsilon house is absurd. Yes, we all are members of the Human Race. Our differences make us unique. But, when you "nicely" ridicule my people in a way that makesitseemli you only want us to act like "brothersand sisters," I must call you on it and correct you. (Besides, we don't continually talk about your forefathers stealing our babies and selling them as slaves. - GET I DRIFT?!) AFRICAN-AMERICAN FEMALE. Roberts reacts to Ferguson's editorial Dear Editor, Yes, racism is an ugly word and an even uglier concept. Why does it occur? Racism occurs because one race is though to be superior to another race. How does racism occur? Racism occurs when people are ignorant of different races and their ways of life. It also occurs when people pass their beliefs from generation to generation. Racism occurs when people cannot face the fact that they are equal to others. The government cannot be blamed for the cause of racism. The individuals who are elected to run the government are to blame, for they bring their opinions and beliefs with them when they enter office. When voting on racial issues, their vote is affected by their beliefs. As for racial groups, you cannot place the blame of racism on any particular race. All races have an equal number of racists. This goes back to the law of nature that states, for every reaction there is an opposite and equal reaction. In dealing with races, this law forms on equilibrium. What some people think racism is among minorities is generally animosity towards their oppressors. In the 60's, Lyndon Johnson's Great Society programs were not designed to put minorities on an equal level with whites. The Great Society programs were designed to provide health insurance for the elderly, prevent minorities from having obstacles when they exercise their right to vote, and create two new federal departments (Housing and Urban Development). It also provided unemployment compensation, food stamp programs, youth employment and federal aid to primary and secondary schools. Racially exclusive clubs and organizations are designed to teach, help and support those unique backgrounds. Even though they are designed for particular group and races, other races can enter these groups, if that is their desire. My question to Mr. Ferguson, is have you ever tried to get into any club or organization that you feel is racially exclusive? Going back to the law of nature, the exclusively racial organizations, are formed because other races did not allow or want minorities in their organizations. So, they formed these groups to promote their people. Mr.Ferguson, itis time forus to wake-up and start focusing on ourdifferences and similarities because it is a natural, balance of nature that can show us how weareequal, to each other. Brent Roberts 'Racism' truth illuminated through etymology Dear Editor. and dark skin is dominant (strong anri n • _ . *" &•/ Dear Editor, In response to the Oct. 7,1993, editorial entitled "Racism: Have the 'tables' turned, "I offer the following: logic, common sense, and truth. I'd like to start off by saying that in the light of truth, racism does not exist, but there is a problem. If you break the word up, race is characterized by a start and a finish. The suffi-ism means the process of or practice of. So, racism actually means the process of or practice of racing or starting at the same time. In a footrace, car-race, horserace or any race, it is characterized by a beginning at the same time, butnotnecessarily an equal finish. Since the original man is the black man, factualized by a white geneticist named G. Mendel who discovered that light skin is recessive (weak) and dark skin is dominant (strong) and that you could get the recessive from the dominant, but not the dominant from the recessive, there is no racing because all of the rest of the human family came from the original family, the black family. Racists practice racism to make people believe that the races that presently exist today all started at the same time or at least two. and that they are winning (thus better) to hide their infancy or brevity of time that they have existed on this planet. Isn't etymology fun! It easily yields truth! You talked about racially exclusive clubs and how these clubs seem to be acceptable by most of the people if they promote some minority group. Also, that minority groups have exclusive beauty pageants, clubs, etc. Why is this so?
