  • Volume 57 Number 6 Sports The Western Carolinian Page 8 Thursday, September 19. 1991 "Wake Forest" from page 7 Williams ran for Wake on first down, gaining three yards, taking it to the 44-yard line. Wake then took a time-out to re-insert West, who came on to fire a 54 yard strike to Dixon for Wake's final touchdown: 40-10. The Cats took over on their own 23 with 9:54 remaining. Galloway passes to Rosbor, Hayes, McNeely, Aiken, Black, and Mathis, along with rushes by Rosbor and Hemphill, brought the ball down to theWFU 16-yard line. Ralph Jimenez scored on the next play with a 16 yard run up the middle. Shirley's extra point made it 40-17. Western scored its last touch down with 29 seconds remaining on a 10-yard Galloway pass to Aiken which produced the final score of 40-24 after a Shirley extra-point kick. Western gained 24 first downs in the loss, versus 18 for the Deacons. The Catamounts gained 188 yards rushing and 210 yards passing for 398 yards of total offense. The Cats completed 17 of 26 passes and gained an average of 5.1 yards per play. In addition WCU converted 13 of 18 third downs. The Deacons gained 204 yards on the ground and 259 in the air for 463 yards on the day. The Deacs had an average gain of 8.42 yards per play and converted six of 10 third down attempts. Leading the Catamount attack was quarterback Lonnie Galloway who netted 63 yards rushing in an option-based strategy. Andra Rosbor, filling in for the injured Thigpen, rushed for 51 yards and caught three passes for 26 yards. Other contributors rushing the football included Ralph Jimenez (29 yards),Thigpen (17 yards), Black (19 yards), Roberts (7 yards), Hemphill (13 yards), and Hayes with one yard. Freshman Craig Aiken led WCU receivers with 87 yards in four attempts. Other Catamount receivers included Roberson, whocaught4 passes for 35 yards, and Rosbor who contributed 26. Football Fall Schedule 1991 " Preview" from page 7 Saturday. Rosbor has rushed for 51 yards and caught three passes in the first two games while spliting time with Thigpen. A win for WCU this Saturday night could possibly make or break the season for the Catamounts. A loss to ETSU could mean an 0-7 start or worse with their upcoming schedule. "This could be a pivotal game for one of us," said Hodgin. "Both teams should be real hungry for a win and that should make for a very intense game." While winning the first conference game is important, it doesn't necessarily signal the start of a great season. Last year the Cats started out 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference before losing six in a row to finish 3-8 overall and 2-5 in conference play. " X-Country" from page 7 20th place, both finishing in 27:45. Junior Jason Whitworth was 30th with a time of 29:03 and freshman Chris Edwards was 34th in 29:22. "Even though we should have finished at least a place higher [overall], I am pleased with the progress our men's team is making," said Williamson, "Jason had an off day, but we still finished only six points out of fourth as Mike, Donnie, and John all ran well and Chris is coming on." Though only fifth overall, the girls team had some good individual performances. Junior Susie Gardner set a new school record for the 3.1 mile distance with a time of 19:05, and placing 11th overall. She broke the old school record of 19:11 set by Cheyl Roberts in 1988. Also having good performances wereRita Roberts and Kim Eubanks who finished 14th and 25th overall respectively. Eubank's time of 21:09 was 50 seconds better than she ran at the WCU Invitational. "Our women's team is get ting close to making a move as they have gotten better each week, Williamson stated." Last Saturday was the first time in the history of our women's program that we have had three finisher's in the top 25 places. The meet this weekend at ASU starts out with the men's race at 9:00 a.m. with the women's right after. Both teams leave Friday afternoon and will get a look at the course before the race. The race is being held at Moses Cone National Park in Blowing Rock. Home games in BOLD TYPE ♦ denotes Sou thern Conference Games Southern Conference Standings Conf. "We're trying to get more comfortable on court with three new players, [replacing the ones who graduated] which in turn will help us play better," Howie added. Another area the team plans to work on will be offensive plays and fundamentals. After defeating a team the size of GSU, Coach Howie felt "winning the game was a compliment."
