Nov. 28th 1937 Dear Leonard- Hope you admire these hitchhiker stamps- “Thum [sic] do, thum [sic] don’t,” according to a sign I saw out West. My writs [sic] & hand are entirely written out, on account of long letters I have indited [sic] to Phil & Tommy. Therefore you will get what’s left over. Before I go further with this will go start supper. It is useless to try to tell you how welcome your letter was-& still is-you are learning from experience to have to take it for granted that the children are all right. Even if all is well with them, you are glad to have it in writing, that they take their Sat bath & keep a clean hanky handy. I am taking it for granted that Margaret is all right after her operation. She wrote frequently just before, but not a word since. Am rereading your letter it seems you did not know about M’s operation, though I may have written to all of you about it as I intended. Can’t remember wether [sic] things get done or are only thought of. The operation had no connection with her other one. Sort of a D.C. that many women have, “Not

In this letter of November 28, 1937, Laura Kephart writes to her son, Leonard Kephart (1892-1988) thanking him for his letter. She gives him a lengthy description of Thanksgiving in Masonville where her son-in-law, Roy Bird, and daughter Barbara hosted. Daughter Lucy, her husband, and her mother-in-law Mrs. Fernow came, George Mack (1860-), and the Riley’s. She describes the house where she is currently living and mentions that she is able to live off of the royalties from Horace Kephart’s books.
