Il AWAY UP IN Towering Peaks » Rushing Streams The Great Smoky Mountains, lying along the border between Tennessee and North Carolina, are eminently worthy to be included in the national park system. This highland section, which is the subject of nationwide interest, has received official approval as a site for a national park and the properly constituted authorities are now engaged in purchasing the tracts that will be included in the bounds of the park. The greatest mountain masses east of the Rockies are in the park area. For a distance of over fifty miles, the Tennessee and North Carolina state line runs along the crest of the Great Smoky Mountains without crossing a gap below five thousand feet, while it surmounts Clingman's Dome, Mt. Guyot, and other summits at an altitude of six thousand feet. In studying sites in the Southern Appalachians in an effort to find one suitable for a national park, the commission appointed by Dr. Hubert Work, secretary of the Interior, visited more than a dozen areas. In its report, the commission said: "We have found many areas which could well be chosen, but the committee was charged with the responsibility of selecting the best, all things considered. Of these several possible sites, the Great Smoky Mountains easily stand first because of the height of the mountains, depth of the valleys, ruggedness of the area, and unexampled variety of trees, shrubs, and plants." Experts in geology, ornithology and botany, as well as nature lovers from various parts of America, have recently visited the Great Smokies, and with one accord they sing the praises of these mountains. Surprise has been expressed from many quarters that mountains with such distinctive features have for so long remained unexplored and unknown. The designated area, lying partly in Tennessee and partly in North Carolina includes approximately 704,000 acres. The boundaries of the park will come within this tract and-it is provided that at least 427,000 acres will be included. Being only a short distance from the edge of the park, Knoxville is fast becoming a tourist center. Good roads lead from Knoxville and Asheville, the two largest cities near the park, into the heart of this new mountain playground. A one-hundred mile "Scenic Loop", starting and ending at Knoxville, is a popular route used by motorists in visiting the park area. The largest tract of indigenous hardwoods in America is found in the Great Smokies. In a week-end trip through these mountains, one may see more indigenous trees and shrubs than in a cross-country trip from Boston to the Pacific Coast, or in European trip from England to Turkey. The slopes of the mountain ranges are covered with masses of virgin timber. The mountain are a succession of biological zones. Trees indigenous to southern Tennessee are found at the base of Mt. LeConte, while at the summit are found trees indigenous to Canada. White pines reach a height of 200 feet 0o^o^os>o^o^o$>o^omo^()^o^

“Knoxville and the Great Smokies” is a 24-page brochure developed by the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce. While the brochure promotes the city, it also suggests its location as a jumping off point for visiting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The brochure was collected by photographer, George Masa (1881-1933).
