  • Womens Golf Senior Ashley Hovda WCnewsmagazine Hovda cards a 74 at the sectional qualifier on July 6 WCU OPI RELEASE Ashley Hovda, a rising senior member of the womens golf team at Western Carolina University, was one of 10 female golfers in the sectional to qualify for the 2005 United States Golf Association (USGA) U.S. Womens Amateur. Hovda carded a single-round 74 at the 5,820-yard Sapona Coun- try Club in Lexington, N.C., to earn the berth in the national championship. Hovda, who became the first-ever Western womens golfer to accomplish the feat, will join qualifiers from the 17 other na- tionwide sectionals in the U.S. Womens Amateur on August 1-7 at the Ansley Golf Club in Roswell, Ga. The competition is scheduled to be played on the Settindown Creek Course. This is a big honor for both Ashley and Western Carolina University, said WCU Director of Golf, and womens head coach, Steve Lott. There are few around that have worked as hard as Ashley has to improve her game. She has devel- oped into one of the top player in the Southern Conference. Hovda finished her junior season at Western Carolina with the lowest round average of all Western womens golf- ers. Her 76.74 average helped earn her Second Team All- Southern Conference honors. She carded the lowest overall round on two of the three days at the year-ending SoCon Championships to rally to a second place finish, three strokes behind medalist Jenny Suh (Furman), who also qualified for the Womens Amateur with a 72 at the Greenville, Del. sec- tional. Hovda, who enters her senior season ranked fourth on Westerns all-time career stroke average charts, was also honored by the conference office by being tabbed the SoCon Womens Golfer of the Month for her play in November, 2004. Additionally, she carded a career-low 67 to earn individual medalist honors at the Wachovia-Great Smokies Intercolle- giate in mid-October helping the Catamounts win the tourna- ment for the third-consecutive year. In addition to her prowess on the links, Hovda also excels in the classroom. She has earned TIAA-CREF Academic All- Southern Conference honors each of the past two seasons. In 2003, Hovda along with teammates Brandy Andersen, Er- ika Danford, and Bianca Melone, was named a National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Academic Scholar Athlete, marking the second-time she had earned the honor. Catamounts vs. Gators: WCU Football to Play at the University of Florida in 2006 WCU OP! RELEASE In addition to its seven Southern Conference opponents next Catamounts have faced since 2000, joining Louisiana State (2000), Qualifies for US Womens Amateur WCU OPI RELEASE season, the Western Carolina football team has locked up one of its non- conference foes, facing the Florida Gators in 2006, Catamount director of athletics Chip Smith announced today. The game is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 18, the week following Western's annual Battle for the Old Mountain Jug with Appalachian State, and will be played at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at Florida Field, commonly known as The Swamp. We are looking forward to playing one of the premier football programs in the country, Smith said. It will be an exciting game. A good number of tickets will be available for Catamount fans and we expect a large contingent to support the Cats in The Swamp next season on November 18th. Florida, a former SoCon member and current Southeastern Conference member, and Western have not previously met in football. This will be the fourth SEC team the Auburn (2002) and Alabama (2004). The only other time Western has faced an SEC school was in 1991 at Georgia. (The Cats have faced South Carolina on four occasions, but that was prior to the Gamecocks joining the SEC.) Playing an NCAA I-A school for the regular season finale is not: new for Western Carolina. In 1986, the Cats wrapped up the season at Wester Carolina will begin preparations for the 2005 this weekend. The Catamounts will report to campus on Friday (Aug. 5) and have their first practice on Saturday (Aug. 6). In all, Western will have 29 sessions before facing Mars Hill on Thursday (Sept. 1) at 7:00 pm at Whitmire Stadium/Waters Field in the teams season opener.
