  • OCTOBER 29 ABRAMS FALLS Just the right time to see the Autumn colors to their best advantage—so come to the Dixie System prepared with canteen and lunch for one meal; be there before eight o'clock a. m., for we have fifty miles to drive before we get to John Oliver's old cabin in Cades Cove, which, by the way, is the oldest cabin in the Cove. The trail to the Falls starts just out side the fence around the cabin. We have it easy over the hill through Elijah's Gap. The way becomes harder as the trail winds down through the laurel to Abrams Creek, which we follow for about a half mile. Then we go up over a ridge that over-looks the creek and surrounding country. We can rest here a minute for this is about half way. Now we go down to the creek again where there is laurel on both sides of the trail and galax leaves almost everywhere. After a little distance, we leave the creek abruptly and begin to climb the third and last ridge, down which we follow. Before long, we hear a roar. This is the Falls. The trail becomes rather steep from here until we reach the creek. There are large flat rocks just below the Falls where we can eat, or we can go over to the island where there is a camping place. Total distance that we hike is six miles. SUMMARY: Re-read first paragraph. Leaders: JOHN K. GILLESPIE. JR. (3-7411) HELEN AIKEN (3-6463) Trees and racks will leach what thou can'st not hear from a master.—Benard (1090-1153 A. D.) 58
