  • take two canteens (or their equivalent) of water. Total driving distance will be about 200 miles. Hiking distance, 12 or 15 miles; good trail. Highest elevation about 5,000 feet. Leaders: WALTER BERRY NINA SHIPE (6-1517) FEBRUARY 19 WALKER PRONG—JUMP-OFF— NEW FOUND GAP This is a new and very interesting hike that was scouted for the first time by members of the Hiking Club only last October. Approximately two miles before reaching Newfound Gap, Walker Prong comes into the west prong of the Little Pigeon River from the left. The road here crosses the stream and curves to the right. A trail starts up the little stream but soon plays out, but one can see where some of the Park men have been through and cut the laurel and underbrush, and may follow this the entire distance. Much of this hike up to the Boulevard must be made by jumping rocks in the bed of the stream and climbing banks on either side. Several places towering bluffs may be seen as the trail leads through a small canyon. About half way up, a beautiful cataract some 200 feet long comes into view as it tumbles its way over rocks covered with green moss and splashes into many crystal clear pools. This is really a beautiful sight. Many places along the Boulevard are as spectacular as the Jump-Off and the views toward LeConte, Greenbriar, Guyot and Chapman are exquisite. Leave Dixie System at 7:30 a. m. Bring food for one meal and canteen. Total hiking distance about 5 1-2 miles, very little of which is hard going Total motor distance 120 miles. Leaders: GEORGE F. BARBER (2-2103) GRACE McNUTT (3-2087) 19
