The Western Carolinian Page 10 Thursday, February 4,1988 Occupational Certification Awarded Eleven seniors at Western Carolina University received Occupational Safety Certification fall semester through Western Carolina University's School of Technology and Applied Science. Certification is awarded In conjunction with the NC Industrial Commission. The Occupational Safety sequence at WCU Includes five courses In personal and community health, emergency medical care. Industrial safety standards, environmental Instrumentation and management systems. It is designed to prepare students to meet safety standards In business, education and Industry, and minimize losses from accidents, health claims, legal actions and property damage. The students, with hometowns and majors, are as follows: W. Jarvls Adams of Roseboro, industrial technology; Lloyd Barron Jr. of Demorest, Ga., a manufacturing engineering technology major; Clay I. Call Jr. of High Point, industrial technology; Michael E. Haley of Winston-Salem, industrial technology and chemistry; Delos D. Hooper of Horse Shoe; Stephen D. Kortheuer of Charlotte, manufacturing engineering technology; Velvet M. Motslnger of Forest City, Industrial technology; Phillip K. Stewart of Pickins, SC, manufacturing engineering technology.Mark A. Taylor of Cullowhee, industrial technology; Timothy D. Waters of Marble, industrial technology; and James F. Wiggins of Ashevilie. an Industrial distribution major. Teacher Education Scholarships Available Applications for the Paul Douglas Teacher Scholarship and the William Tasse Alexander Scholarship are available In Killian 250 for eligible candidates. Formerly known as the Congressional Teacher Scholarship Program, the Paul Douglas Teacher Scholarship continues to be funded by Congress for an annual award of up to $5,000 per year; It is renewable for up to four years. The scholarship recipient Is required to teach two years for each year of scholarship assistance. However, If the graduate teaches in a "teacher shortage area." the teaching requirement is one year per award. Financial need Is NOT a criterion for the Douglas Scholarship. However, a superior academic and extracurricular record, as well as a commitment to teaching (particularly In North Carolina), are requirements. Applicants MAY NOT receive a State-funded teacher scholarship or grant and be eligible for the Paul Douglas Scholarship. To be eligible for the second scholarship, the William Tasse Alexander Scholarship, applicants must: 1. be a resident of Mecklenburg County, N.C. 2. be a Junior or senior and a full-time student. 3. be in a program leading to a career in teaching. 4. have a minimum grade point average of 3.0. The value of the William Tasse Alexander Scholarship varies from $1,000 to $3,000 per year. The scholarship may be renewed a second year upon satisfactory academic performance.
