  • JANUARY 22 RICH MOUNTAIN Our destination is on the road to Cades Cove approximately thirty-eight miles from Knoxville. The trip to Rich Mountain is one of those medium length hikes that appeals alike to those who like the hard trips and those who can't make or don't like the long ones. The round trip is about four miles. Altitude 3500 feet. As we climb the serpentine road up the side of Rich Mountain there unfolds before our eyes a marvelous panorama with Tuckaleechee Cove at our feet and the Chilhowee range beyond. From the mountain top we look out across the indescribable beauty of Cades Cove to Gregory Bald and Thunderhead. To the left we may see Siler's Bald, Clingman's Dome and Mt. LeConte. As Rich Mountain is heavily wooded these views are only obtainable when the foliage is off the trees. In the summer it is necessary to climb a tree to see out. Leave Dixie System at 8:30 a. m. Drive to concrete bridge beyond Sunshine, cross bridge and railroad tracks and continue on old road for about a mile, turn right just before reaching a church and continue to the first gap in the mountain before parking. Bring canteen and food for one meal. Leaders: EUGENE GOOCH (3-4253) BEATRICE MATHER (3-2360) "Twilight upon my path, And for mine inn tonight The shadow of a tree And for mine host, A flower." —From the Japanese 15
