  • SIMPLE LEAVES WITH TEETH ON MARGINS BEECH CHESTNl WITCH-HAZEL SILVERBELL WILLOW AMERICAN BEECH leaves often have a faint tinge of blue on the upper surface, especially along the veins. On the underside, they are shiny light yellow-green, hairy on stem and midrib. The bark is usually a characteristic steel gray, and smooth. The nuts are shaggy and brown, on long stems. The tree is common at all elevations, occurring in pure stands ("beech gaps") on some of the ridges. AMERICAN CHESTNUT leaves are almost twice the size of beech leaves, with longer teeth. They are a soft, smooth green on both sides. Although the blight has killed the mature trees, rootstocks may live on and continue to send up shoots. The tree was once abundant up to 5,500 feet. 26
