Pow as president of Western Carolina University came after months of work by a special committee of the trustees and a faculty advisory committee. Jonathan Woody, chairman of the Board stated in an interview that 32 candidates had been considered. He said that he had personally contacted men in Maryland, Ohio, Kansas, and Louisiana as well as other southern states. In making the announcement that Pow would be WCU's next president Woody referred to the Alabamian as "an education statesman of the highest caliber. Not only Western Carolina, but all of North Carolina can be glad and proud that he has accepted this position. We need men of Dr. Pow's educational stature in our state. He has been eminently successful at the University of Alabama and has established a national reputation there and in previous positions. "Dr. Pow will come to us at a time when Western Carolina PRESIDENT PAUL A. REID to WCU. is forging ahead on all fronts. We have had tremendous growth, and we expect this to . continue." Woody also cited Dr. Paul A. Reid's contributions to Western Carolina since coming here as president in 1949. Pow, who will take office July 1, stated that he was excited and honored that he had Al Hirt To Perform May 2 Al Hirt, the king of trumpet players, will perform at Western Carolina University Thursday, May 2, at 8 p.m. All WCU students will be admitted free to the performance. POW been chosen as Western Carolina's next president, "My wife and I," Pow told The Carolinian, "searched carefully for the place that we wanted to spend in our next period of service, and this is where we want to be." "I am excited about the spirit and attitude that North Carolina takes toward education," Pow stated. Concerning the University in particular, Pow stated that many new programs could be initiated at the university. ' 'If this isn't a place where we can question, and questions cannot be answered, then what is a university?" Dr. Frank A. Rose, president of the University of Alabama, said "Dr. Alex Pow has rendered fine service to his alma mater and to the State of Alabama in numerous capacities for twenty years. "He has earned the respect of his associates, and his broad experience will be an invaluable assets in his new presidency, and Western Carolina University is to be congratulated on the choice of its selection committee. 1 join with Dr. Pow's many friends here in wishing him success in his new position." In addition to the qualifications and experience of Dr. Pow listed in Tuesday's Carolinian, the administrator has served as a consultant to numerous federal and state agencies, higher education institutions in the United States and abroad, philanthropic foundations, and private enterprise, including The Ford Foundation, UNIVAC Division of the Sperry-Rand Corporation, the United States Department of State, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He serves on the Committee on Sponsored Projects of the CONTINUED Page 8 The board of trustees of Western Carolina University voted Tuesday to withdraw from the Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at the end of Uie 1968-69 academic year. The board also announced that a new director of athletics will be named to succeed Tom Young , who requested that he be relieved effective June 30, 1968, and assigned to other duties. Young has been director of athletics at Western Carolina since 1957, and has coached at WCU since 1946. The board said present contracts for athletic contests involving other Carolinas Conference schools will be honored "without causing undue hardship to any school involved." Other members of the Carolinas Conference were notified Tuesday afternoon of the board action. The trustees approved an increase of $5 per student per quarter in the student activities fee, with the full proceeds of the increase going to the athletic department for development of an expanded athletic program. Western Carolina students, in an earlier campus poll, had overwhelmingly favored the increased fee to support a broader program. The changes in the WCU athletic program were based on recommendations of the faculty athletic committee. All aspects of athletics at Western Carolina have been under study by the committee for a period of months. Prior to Tuesday's board action, the recommendations of the committee had been presented to and approved by the Faculty Senate. la recommending the appointment of a new director of athletics, the committee said that "an expanded program of intercollegiate athletics can best be served by a person who will be available to develop the program over a number of years." Young, one of the best known sports figures in the state for. many years, will reach retirement age in' 1972 under the university's retirement policy.i retirement age in 1972 under the university's retirement policy. Withdrawal from the Carolinas Conference was recommended on grounds that an expansion of the WCU sports program is desirable to allow for greater student participation. Western Carolina, the athletic committee said, will not have "a great opportunity to participate in such an expanded program within the confines of the present conference." The committee also said restrictions of the conference <<n the number of athletic scholarships for football and basketball place WCU in an unfavorable postion. In addition to these two sports, WCU also competes in baseball, tennis, track, cross country and golf. Plans are being developed to develop teams in swimming , soccer, wrestling and gymnastics. Tt 3re will be a meeting of the Western Carolinian staff on Monday, April 29, at 7 p.m. All staff members are urged to attend because of the voting for Carolinian awards and plans for the weekend in Gatlinburg, Staff members who are entering the contest for best news, features and sports writers <*rc asked to have their stories in by Monday, May 6.
