  • APRIL 13, 1978/THE WESTERN CAROLiNIAN/PAGE 11 More students in ROTC An increasing number of college students appear to be taking advatage of the opportunities and benefits available to them by enrolling in the Army ROTC two-year program, according to Brigadier General W.D. Barnes, Commander. First ROTC Region. Within the academic framework, the two-year program is designed to develop the leadership potential of college students and prepare them for positions of responsibility in their chosen careers. Adventure training programs further add to the leadership development of cadets. These activities include orienteering, mountaineering, canoe and rubber raft trips, just to name a few. "Many students appreciate the opportunity to compete for the Army ROTC merit scholarships," BG Barnes said. "These pay for the cadets' full tuition, books, laboratory tees, and other educational expenses." All cadets in the two vear program receive a living allowance of up to $1,000 for each school year, plus payment for attendance at a six -week advanced camp. Beginning this year, students who enroll in Army ROTC and are not awarded merit scholarships, have the option of choosing commissions in the Army Reserve or National Guard. "Army ROTC cadets are the future leaders of our country." he said. "Their training will serve then well in the Army or any civilian career they choose." Gov. Jim Hunt proclaimed the week of April 8 through 15 as ROTC Week in North Carolina, commemorating their 150 years of military training on college campuses. Carland awarded CMA James W. Carland Jr. is one of only some 500 persons in the US to have been awarded the coveted Certificate of Management Accounting (CMA). Not only that, but he passed all five sections of the difficult CMA examination in his first sitting, a feat accountants describe as "practically unheard of." Carland, who is now an instructor of WCU business courses in Asheville, has a broad background in business and civic activities. He was employed by the Bank of Asheville from 1972 until 1977. In 1975, he was appointed as manager of the commercial loan administration department and in 1976 was elected as vice president of the bank. A native of Hendersonville, Carland is a 1965 graduate of T. C. Roberson High School. He holds the bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Asheville and the master of business administration degree from WCU. Carland formerly served as a part-time instructor at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Institute. He also is active as an independent consultant in management and financial matters for small businesses in Asheville. A member of the Asheville Javcees, Carland has been active in volunteer work for the United Way Campaign, the Heart Fund, Boy Scouts, YMCA and YWCA. He has been involved in the Young Bankers Division of the North Carolina Bankers Association and has given more than 200 lectures on economic literacy for that organization.
