Modern novels, television and movies are eulogizing the "anti-hero," the ideal of "the new breed." In the movie, HUD, the hero brings the message to the masses: "The only helping hands you get in this world are the ones that lower your coffin." He philosophizes about crooked quiz shows and political bribery; not as examples of moral decay, but examples for inspiration. In Camus' THE STRANGER, the hero is bored by his mother's death. He wise-cracks and tells jokes at the funeral. Television is saturated with grim young men who mouth cliches like "I didn't ask to get born Into this lousy world," and "In this world, it's everybody for himself." In one recent show, two teen-agers stumble over a body in an alley. One says, "Say, Rick, this guy is hurt bad." Rick says, "Yeah, so what?" Is he cruel and heartless? No, says the psychaitrist at the end of the program. He is a product of our age of tension. He is reacting normally to an abnormal world. Should we condemn him? No Sireeeeeee. He is "cool." He has adjusted. If he had not adjusted, he might have become neurotic! If trends in current novels, movies and television are supposed to be reflections of current attitudes, then I withdraw. I'm too "square" to swing this time. This grim new_ hero, this passive, detached on-looker, bewilders me. I can't "cut him on." I'm too maudlin and romantic. I'm one of those mushy sentimental people who gets upset when I see a dead dog or cat on the highway. Car wrecks disturb me. I get all shook up when I see those CARE posters with the little bin children holding out little tin cups. I even get mushy when I see "Queen for a Day." So the "new breed" wouldn't want me, thank God! A long time ago, (ten years) when I read Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, I dim a lot of it because the events were too grotesque and horrible. One scene I remember takes place in a hospital. A dying woman comes out of a coma to find her bed surrounded by a class of elementary children who have come to watch her die. Part of their education is "death adjustment." As the dying woman struggles for breath, a teacher stands by the bed and lectures the children on the process of death. The children eat candy bars and ice cream and watch with detached curiosity. When I read this scene again last week, it had lost much of tis bizarre quality. The entire scene had a quality of prophecy fulfilled; prediction which had become fact. Mrs. Lilian Buchanan, College Librarian, asks that all students having library books damaged in the recent flood please turn these books in as soon as possible. She is majoring in Music Education. She is a member of the Marshals Club, Sigma Kappa Sorority, Concert Choir and Methodist Choir. These girls, chosen by the respective Greek organizations, will ride in the Homecoming as well as serving in various other functions. Each girl is a worthy recipient of the honor which has been bestowed on her. Each will decorate the various activites of the respective Greek organizations during the coming year.
