-3 0 t 0 mmyjvm$ That this Convention heartily approves the action of Congress in establishing the great national forest rassrvis in th* Western States and territories, and the mors recent action of Congress, in providing for the construction of a great system of irrigation works in'these States; and in as much as the forests and the soils -<hich these forests protect in the Southern Appalachian mountain region serve as a natural reservoir for the storage, -of the water which falls in excessive rains in this region, this Convention asks the co-operation of the Senators and Representatives in Congress from the western States in securing the pajpfege of tha Appalachian forest reserve Bill now before Congress as an extan- 7l<£uXuz sion to these southeastern states of the great policy of water storage and;-irrigation by the Government ahich has already wisely been inaugerated in the West.

This 19-page series of documents includes resolutions proposed at a convention sponsored by the Appalachian National Park Association and Asheville Board of Trade. Held on October 25, 1902, the meeting promoted the idea of a national park in the southern Appalachians. Two weeks prior to the event, the Asheville Citizen ran an article noting that “A Hundred Towns and Cities Are Asked to Take Part.” Indeed, the convention was a success with 1,500 people from various states attending.
