  • E. E. RITTER Ernest Elmer Ritter was born on a farm near Muncy, Pennsylvania, on December 6th, 1883, the son of Mr. John T. Ritter and his wife, who was Susan Edwards. When not attending school, Ernest helped with the farm work until he was twenty- one years of age, when he went to the W. M. Ritter Lumber Company's Panther Mill to work in the planing mill. This was on February 22, 1904. In May, 1904, he was transferred to the Dry Fork Mill, where he remained for two years, working on the lumber yard. In 1906 he went to Lower Elk, Kentucky, as an inspector. His next job was that of Mill Grader at Hampton, and later at the Piney Mill. A large part of Mr. E. E. Ritter's time has been spent at the mill of The Colleton Cypress Company on the edge of the Big Salkehatchie Swamp at Colleton, South Carolina. The photograph of the swamp which is a part of the cover design was made at this operation. He first went there as a helper in the riling room in 1908, and by steady perseverance worked his way up to the position of Yard Foreman and later Superintendent. On May 1st, 1917, he was made Assistant Division Superintendent of the First Division, comprising Colleton and Hazel Creek operations. In September of 1920 he became Division Superintendent, succeeding Mr. S. M. Wolfe. He still serves in this capacity. In June, 1917, Mr. Ritter was married to Miss Mary Breece, of Columbus. They have one child, William M. Ritter, Jr., age four years. Trvo
