  • All About Water By Rachel Mitchell * WCnewsmagazine Water is one of the most versatile and beneficial substances in the world. People use water for washing clothes, drinking, taking showers and just for funny everyday, all around the world. With the growing stress people endure, water has increasing become a form of mental and physical rejuvenation. Water aerobics has become a popular form of maintaining good health because of the low impact and stress reducing exercises. Even people who can not swim can enjoy water aerobics because the water only reaches to about waist deep but others can be done in deeper water. Water aerobics work every muscle and joint in the body but dont hurt them with hard impacts that someone may get while jogging. The right temperature can cool down and relax muscles and minds. Therapy has gone a step further with water therapy treatments but it has been used by the ancient Greeks, Romans and Chinese. With the increase in society to look great, water is the ultimate in any diet. According to High Vibrations Academy, Water suppresses the appetite naturally and helps the body metabolize stored fat. Studies have shown that a decrease in water intake will cause fat deposits to increase, while an increase in water intake can actually reduce fat deposits. Water has no fat, calories, or carbs so it will fit into any diet plan. It is also recommended that people should drink about eight glasses of water a day in order to stay fully hydrated and it just feels good. Water is a commonly used as a recreational play with people all across the world. Children enjoy water balloons, water guns or water slides to just kick back and have fun. Adults and children alike enjoy boating, skiing, fishing and swimming on lakes and _ rivers. Though sometimes it can be more of a hassle than a pleasure, all types of hobbies and sports are associated with boating in a high powered speedboat or the slower but just as popular kayaks and canoes. An ever increasing form of relaxation and enjoyment is for people to go to a spa. Aspa has various forms of relaxation using water such as a whirlpool, steam room, and the new water massage beds which are water beds with a built in massage table. All of these relax muscles and minds with rhythmic motions and heat. A more expensive but popular form of relaxing is to us salt from the Dead Sea. According to Salt Works, The waters from the Dead Sea are unique in that they contain 27% of various salts as compared to 3% in normal sea water. Magnesium is important for both combatting stress and fluid retention, slowing skin aging and calming the nervous system. Calcium is effective at preventing water retention, increasing circulation and strengthening bones and nails. Potassium energizes the body, helps to balance skin moisture and is a crucial mineral to replenish following intense exercise. The Dead Sea contains other chemicals that are equally beneficial and important. In todays world of fast pace, rushed schedules its becoming more important for people to let go and relax. The Counseling Center provides mental health services for students by means of individual, couples, and group sessions at no cost, and they have a psychiatrist available one day per week. If youre reading this and thinking that you could gain absolutely nothing from the Counseling Center because you have no major mental health concerns, think again. According to the National College Health Assessment Survey (2005), out of 624 WCU students, ninety percent felt overwhelmed by all they had to do, and fifty-nine percent felt things were hopeless. Chances are that we've all felt like that before. The most common reasons for going for therapeutic consultations are depression, anxiety and stress, followed by family and relationship-based problems. Sometimes ResLife or Judicial Affairs will refer students who have violated code of conduct standards (i.e.; alcohol violations, violent behaviors) for mandatory assessments. The Counseling Center is here to facilitate self exploration, understanding, and skill development, and encourage decisions and actions in support of personal goals and healthy behaviors and attitudes, according to the Director of the Counseling Center, Dr. John Ritchie. The Counseling Center has many group counseling opportunities that touch on a variety of topics to promote students growth, self- awareness, and mental health. From Enhancing Self Esteem to Love Your Body to Survivors of Sexual Assault/Abuse to the Rainbow Room, the participants in these groups can learn from the counselors and one another that they are not alone, and from there, they can enhance acceptance of themselves. ways to relax with water. Although the center does not respond to all issues and is not considered a comprehensive counseling center, they provide short term, goal oriented counseling. After office hours, there are 24/7 Emergency Services available with a counselor on call at all times, and during office hours, there are 11:00 and 4:00 emergency appointment hours everyday. lf you are concerned about a friend, heres what you can do to help them: - Consult with the Residential Living staff or Student Affairs - Encourage your friend to go to a consultation, or if it is a true crisis, encourage them to go to the emergency appointment hours - If itis after hours and there is a real crisis, call the Emergency Services available through the WCU Police - Come in for a consultation about your friend, and if possible, bring the person with you The Counseling Center is not just about therapy sessions. We help train and teach students to make mental health presentations and programs around campus, says Dr. Ritchie, referring to CLAW (Campus Leaders Advocating Wellness) in conjunction with the Wellness Center. Undergraduates can become involved in the Counseling Center by joining CLAW, and second year internships are available to graduate students.
