  • CAP Center Advises Freshmen By Rick McDaniel Managing Editor "We've really got a fine system-it's just a matter of making it work." This is the way Raymond Ledford, director of the CAP center at WCU summed up his reactions to freshmen advisement by the CAP advisors this semester. "The big problem is that students don't respond the way we want them to." According to Ledford, approximately 35 percent of all entering students at WCU have not declared a major. Of the 65 percent that did state a preference, 30 percent will change majors at least once while at WCU. "We think advisement is important so that students don't get locked into a major before they are ready to make that decision," Ledford said. Ledford pointed out that WCU offers 87 different degree programs, and that advisement provided by the center's faculty advisors gives students time to explore opportunities. Upon entering WCU for the first time, each new student is assigned an advisor. If the student has stated a preference for a particular major, an effort is made to find a faculty advisor who teaches in that area. If the student has no particular major in mind, he is assigned an advisor from the faculty volunteers. Ledford stated that sometimes it's difficult to provide first-year students with an advisor from a particular department due to the number of majors in that department. Darrell Bryant, director of Student Advisement stated that "Juniors and Seniors see us as a place to go-we need to convince the freshmen and transfer students of this also." Ledford emphasized that an advisor does more than approve class schedules. They can also help students with class problems as well as provide advice and guidance to prevent students from making mistakes in choosing classes that could delay graduation. "We've all heard the horror stories about people who winded up needing one more hour to graduate," said Ledford, "but we're here to prevent this from happening" "We're interested in the student," said Ledford. "We've got some of the most dedicated advisors on campus." Both Ledford and Bryant agreed that students who try to make it through school without seeking advisement were at a definite disadvantage. They also emphasized that students should see their advisors before trying to register for spring semester classes. Students who aren't sure of their advisor should call the CAP center at 227-7170. Cap&Gown Society The Cap and Gown Senior Honor Society held its first meeting, elected the following officers for the 1980-81 school year: Katherine Moore, an English major, president; Barry Hamrick, Ind. Ed., vice-president; Jo McGinnis, Education, secretary; Cheryl Gladieux, Math, treasurer; and Robert Brown, Art, historian. In addition to election of officers, the group decided to review the proposed new general education requirements, to study current faculty evaluation procedures, and to consider a service project for the University. Cap and Gown members are chosen each spring from among the academically eligible rising seniors, and installed in a initiation ceremony. This year's members will be working on affiliation with the national honor society known as Mortar Board. A list of current members includes: Karen Beavuais, Robert Brown, Lynn Brown, Elizabeth Gibson, Cheryl Gladieux, Helen Hall, Barry Hamrick, Paula James, Mike Jones, Jill Long, Jo McGinnis, Katherin Moore, Patricia Myers, Rebecca Nelson, Lavern Oxendine, Lee Smith, Richard Sullins and Mark Williams . <&OrC] the great american smokeout 03 5H0P Wide.
