  • Catamount football welcomes three to team wou opi RELEASE Western Carolina head football coach Kent Briggs has announced the addition of Robbie Sovie (Macon, Ga.), Mark Burgess (Odessa, Fla.) and Marcus Vereen (Winston-Salem, N.C.) to the Catamount squad. The trio are all enrolled at Western and will be able to practice during spring drills. These three players are quality people as well as good football players, Briggs said. They will be very beneficial to our program in addressing some needs. What really excites me is these players will be able to make an impact this spring. Sovie (Stratford Academy) originally signed a football National Letter of Intent with the Western in 2002. However, that spring, he decided to pursue a career in professional baseball after being drafted in the fourth round (110th pick overall) of the Detroit Tigers in the annual Major League Baseball amateur draft. Sovie, who played for the single-A Oneonta Tigers this past season, was widely regarded for his speed. Jim Callis of Baseball America said, The Tigers also locked onto a top athlete in Robbie Sovie, David Berghoefer & Raquel Ramseur the fastest legitimate prospect in the (2002) draft. For Western, Sovie (6-1, 190) will play safety and he will have four years of eligibility with the football program. Not only was Sovie a standout on the baseball diamond, but he was named All-State in football as a senior and sophomore. He was additionally tabbed his regions Player of the Year and All- Middle Georgia as a senior. Sovie is Stratford Academy's all-time leader in rushing yards (4,850), all-purpose yards (5,538) and touchdowns (79). As a senior, he logged 80 tackles, including eight for losses, and three interceptions on defense, while rushing for 1,455 yards and a school-record 29 touchdowns as a senior. He added three receiving TDs that season to also set a school record with 32 scores in a season. Sovie helped Stratford to a 37-3 record over his final three seasons with two AAA state titles and a semifinal appearance. He was a four-time all-region pick, rushing for over 1,000 yards each season. In baseball, Sovie was an All-State selection as a named Arbys/Catamount Student- Athletes of the month wou opirevease The Western Carolina department of athletics has named junior center David Berghoefer (mens basketball) and freshman Sprinter Raquel Ramseur (womens track & field) its Arbys/Catamount Student- Athletes of the Month for December. Berghoefer (Cross Plains, Wisc.) averaged 13.3 points in the Catamounts seven games during the month, which included a season- high 22 points in the Dec. 1 victory over Liberty. He connected on 10-of-18 shots versus the reigning Big South tournament champions, adding a season-high six steals in the winning effort. Berghoefer was also instrumental in Western Carolina's victory over instate rival, East Carolina. The junior tallied a double- double of 18 points and 13 rebounds helping the Catamounts record their first-ever victory Over a Conference USA opponent, which was also just the ninth SoCon triumph in 52 chances versus C-USA since 1996-97. In mid-December, Berghoefer turned in his second double-double performance of the month by scoring 18 and pulling down 11 boards in the loss at the Big Tens lowa Hawkeyes. Ramseur (Charlotte, N.C.) was a part of a record-breaking day for the Western Carolina's indoor track & field teams at the non-team scored Appalachian Invitational held in early December. The first-year sprinter scorched the field with a Holmes Convocation Center record 55.73 in the 400-meter dash, eclipsing the previous record by more than a second. Ramseur was also a part of Westerns 4x400- meter relay team that smashed the old course record by more than WCnewsmagazine senior, batting .538 (second-best, single- season average in Stratford history) and hitting 14 home runs. Burgess (Tampa Jesuit HS) comes to Western after spending three seasons as a backup offensive lineman at Tulane. The 6-5, 295-pound Burgess will have two years of eligibility at Western, redshirting as a true freshman with the Green Wave. At Tampa Jesuit, he was a first team All- State selection as ajunior. He missed most of his senior season with an injury, but still landed on the all-district squad, as well as being listed on the St. Petersburg Times and Tampa Tribune all-county teams in 2001. He additionally was named one of Floridas top 100 players by the Orlando Sentinel and one of the top 75 players in the state by FloridaPrep.com. Also, prior to the injury his senior year, Athlon had him listed as one of the top 25 linemen in the nation. Burgess was invited to play in Hillsborough County and Florida-Georgia all-star games. Burgess helped Tampa Jesuit to an undefeated regular season in 2001, three district championships and three region finals. of the Catamounts The Western Carolina Department of Athletics will honor its student-athletes who posted a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) or better in 2004 during halftime mens Vereen, who will have four years of eligibility, graduated from Mount Tabor HS in Winston-Salem in 2004 before spending this past fall at Hargrave (Va.) Military Academy. At Hargrave, the 6- 1, 190-pound wide receiver caught 18 passes for 314 yards and three touchdowns. Vereen also scored a rushing TD last season. For Mount Tabor, Vereen helped the Spartans reach the North Carolina 4A Championship game, finishing the season with a 14-2 record. As a senior, he has 68 receptions, 19 of which went for touchdowns, and ranked second in the state with 1,345 receiving yards. He caught at least one TD in the Spartans first seven games of the 2003 season, tying a state record for touchdown receptions in consecutive games. Vereen was selected to play in the 2004 North Carolina Coaches Association East-West All-Star game. He was named to the Winston-Salem Journals All-Northwest team as well as being named to the All-Metro 4-A team. Vereen was also a standout on the Mount Tabor basketball and baseball teams. Both the men and womens track & field teams continues the indoor portion of their schedules on January 21-22 as they travel to Johnson City, Tenn., to compete in the NISWONGER Invitational at the Memorial Center. This past fall, a total of 155 student-athletes had a GPAor 3.0 or better, including 10 Catamount student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 GPA for the semester and 57 having a GPA between 3.5- 3.9. During the spring of 2004, a total of 122 student-athletes had a GPA of 3.0 or better, including 12 with a perfect 4.0 GPA and 47 having a GPA between 3.5-3.9. During the fall semester, eight of the 14 WCU teams (with indoor and outdoor track & field counting once) had a both a semester and cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. The tennis team led the way with a 3.815 GPA for the fall semester and a cumulative GPA of 3.826. They were followed by soccer (3.55 semester GPA and 3.542 cumulative GPA), women's golf (3.073 semester GPA and 3.113 cumulative GPA), womens basketball (3.016 semester GPA and 3.075 cumulative GPA) and baseball (3.037 semester GPA and 3.016 cumulative GPA). A break down of the teams above shows that tennis had all six players post at least a 3.0 GPA for the fall semester, women's golf had all 10 players post at least a 3.0, soccer had 20 of its 21 players post at least a 3.0, womens tack & field had 22 of its 27 players (81.5 percent of the team) with at least a 3.0, womens cross country had five of its seven players (71.4 percent of the team) with at least a 3.0, volleyball had nine of its 13 players (69.2 percent of the team) post atleast a 3.0, baseball had 17 of its 30 players (56.6 percent of the team) with least a 3.0 and womens basketball had ent of
