  • TUESDAY APRIL 22, 1975 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Page 3 Tte Wester Cai^dLjiniaM £ pf \I)T Track team defeats Appalachian, 90-54 An inspired Western Carolina University track and field team put forth its best effort of the season to rout arch rival Appalachian State, 90-54, in a dual meet here Saturday afternoon. The frequent rain showers failed to dampen the Catamounts spirits as they dominated the meet from the opening gun and won eleven of the seventeen events and displayed surprising depth in claiming ten second place finishes. Levon Wilson, the senior sprinter from Charlotte, was easily the meet's outstanding performer as he won both the 100 and 220 yard dashes and ran the lead leg on WCU winning 440 and mile relay teams. He outdueled ASU's Devon Ford to take the 100 yard dash in :09.9 and again in the 220 with a time of :22.3, Later, the Cat sprinter teamed with Clifford Surratt, Randy Layman and Greg Walton to win the 440 relay in a time of :42.4 and joined Surratt, Layman and John Arnold on the victorious mile relay team for a 3:28.1 clocking. The Cats had their best day of the spring in field events as they took four firsts and four second places. Maynard Pierce was the top field man with victories in the long jump and triple jump. Chandler Muse won the high jump and placed second in the long jump. Jon Wiggins threw the javelin 178*2" to win that event and Felix Setzer claimed seconds in both the shot put and discus. Other track victories were posted for WCU by Randy Held- erman and Dennis Kaspryzk (tie) in the mile run; Gregg Walton and Skip Watkins in the 120 high hurdles (tie); and Surratt in the 440. WCU's next track meet will be a dual affair at Gardner- Webb College, May 3. targum crossword ■ 12 3 4 5 6 |7 8 9 10 11 IT-] 13 Il4 W 16 Il7 is di9 20 Wu21 |23 ■pT 1 - "27_ 28 29 ■ 30 31 ■ 32 33| J34 ■HHHfl 35 36 37 381 B39 40 41 42 43 H44 45 Bj4b ■48 jp9 53 TT |55 56 - 1 ■ 59 Heo ■ ©Edward Julius, 1 Targum CW73-14 ACROSS 1 The occult 7 A shaking 13 Social group 14 Attendants to an important person 16 Seasoning 17 Wreaths for the head 18 Mohammedanism 19 Exists 21 Child 22 accompli 23 Strength 24 Remedy 25 For shame! 26 Extends across 27 More painful 28 Mistakes in published work 30 Salaries 32 Lustful 34 Harvard 35 Strict disciplinarian 39 Portion of a choral ode 43 City in New York 44 Actor Gert 46 Accelerate 47 Bring up 48 Mints 49 Wicked 50 Noun-forming suffix 51 Famous grammarian 52 Started 53 Plant part 55 Distance traveled 57 Chooses 58 Frightened 59 Hereditary ruler 60 Cognition DOWN Pirate Artist's studio Procreated (archaic) Ancient Syria Lexicographer Yutang Ancient Greek land Farcical imitation 8 Renovate 9 Greek letter (pl.) 10 In the center 11 " good deserves another" 12 Spread hearsay 13 Nun's hood 15 Organic compound (pl.) 20 Lodging places 23 Produce eggs 24 College girls 26 Beer mug 27 Binge 29 Place of sacrifice 31 Metrical feet 33 American inventor 35 Swamp 36 Warned 37 Without hesitation 38 Neat 40 Japanese paper folding 41 Floods 42 Leveled off 45 show 48 Sects 49 Swerves 51 Narcotic shrub 52 Livid: Scot. 54 Prison 56 Labor Union s 'Jerry' attack too much for Erskine JERKY GAINES .411 batting average Western Carolina's "Jerry" attack proved to be more than Erskine could handle here Friday afternoon as WCU blanked their visitors from South Carolina, 7-0. Reed ran his record to 3-1 with a two-hit shutout of Erskine, He has not allowed an earned run to be scored against him in the last 31 innings he has pitched. The sophomore righthander had complete control of the contest as he did not allow a runner past second base and permitted only two Erskine batters to reach that point. His ERA of 0.91 should place him among the top ten college division pitchers in the nation, Gaines upped his battingaver- age to .411, the highest mark attained by a WCU player at this point in the season in several years, Danny Carswell, with two hits, and Jimmy Stewart, with a triple and three RBIs, also wielded hot bats for the Catamounts. The Cats got the only run they needed in the first inning when Gaines singled, Btole second, and scored on Dale Fox's single to right. A sacrifice fly by Stewart and (iaines single sent two more runs across in the fourth inning. A single by Bobby Gllmore, Wayne Tolleson's fielder's choice that was errored by Erskine, a sacrifice by Ernie Lasher, and triples by Stewart and Gaines accounted for four more runs in the eighth, ^lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllliillllllllllllllllMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIMIIMilU LAS' ' WEEK'S SOLUTION c 0 C 0 A MA T T R E A P 0 L A N D A c R E E T C H c A R V A C H 0 C 01 A T E 0 F T I M M T H ■_ E H M A A R S S T E F.
