A search committee, comprised of five trustees, five faculty members, the chair of the faculty, and the presidents of the studer.t body and alumni association and headed by WCU Board of Trustees Chairman Stephen W. Woody, has been formed to review the applicants. Woody and other committee members indicated that candidates in a "transitional" stage of their careers rather that near the end, "non- traditional in that they may not have come up through all the traditional academic ranks," and that would "offer some diversity" were characteristics of those being considered. Various interviews and on-site background checks were performed while reviewing candidates. The four remaining prospects and their spouses were scheduled for Cullowhee visits this month for on campus meetings with university officers, faculty members, students, alumni and the public. One of the contenders, John William Bardo, visited the campus Wednesday and Thursday of last week. Bardo is now serving as Chief Academic Officer at Bridgewater, Massachusetts, where he has been since 1990 Previously, Bardo gained experience as Dean of the School of Liberal Arts at Southwest Texas State University, Chair of the Department of Sociology and Social Work at Wichita State University. He has also held visiting appointments in Wales and Australia. He said that he heard of the job opportunity from a friend at Lenoir- Rhyne. He believes that WCU is "poised to make its next move" which could include "intergrating better with the region and culture." "If we are to succeed as a society, we must use the talents of all our people," Bardo stated. Other candidates and their spouses will visit as follows: • Dr. Larry D. Coble of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Jan. 18-19 • Dr. Harry S. Carter of Georgia Southern University, Jan. 23-24 - • Dr. Barbara S. Haskew of Middle Tennessee State University, Jan. 26-27 A fifth candidate, Dr. William Ruud of Boise State University, has recently withdrawn his name from the running. Meetings, interviews and sessions and receptions for the general public, faculty, staff and students will be a part of each candidate's visit. The public sessions will be held in the auditorium of the Coulter Building with a reception following in the Cherokee Room of the University Center. The first three presentations will begin at 3 pm. However, the Jan. 27 gathering will be held at 2:30 pm. because of scheduling conflicts. The chancellorship was vacated last June when Myron L. Coulter retired. John H. Wakeley, Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, is serving as Chancellor until a successor is found. Will Butterfly, WCU's longtime campus friend, be condemned to a life at the pound? ETS Pulls Computerized GRE Educational Testing Service will temporarily withdraw the computer version of the GRE after an investigation by Kaplan Educational Centers revealed a serious security problem. Kaplan initiated its investigation after hearing anecdotal evidence that students were sharing information about the test. In May, Kaplan had voiced concerns about the test's vulnerability at a hearing before the New York State Standing Committee on Higher Education. Kaplan's investigation showed that a small pool of questions is used on the test for an extended period of time, making it too easy for students to share information with future test- t?i kpts Ets' Continued on Page 2 January 19, 1994 Welcome Back!
